Reminder: Turn Your Clocks Forward Tonight for Daylight Saving

When do we "Spring forward"?

You know the old saying "Fall back, spring forward." Well, tonight is the time to spring forward.  Don't forget to move your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday night. Officially Daylight Saving is 2 a.m. on Sunday. Yes, moving the clocks ahead does mean we all lose an hour of sleep, but in return it will be light later in the day. Besides, the lost hour falls on Saturday night, so just sleep in a bit on Sunday before getting up and starting the day with your Patch Newsletter.

Is Today the Shortest Day of the Year?

Today is the Winter Solstice, normally the shortest day of the year. On the plus side, the days will start to get longer on Sunday.

Sunset will be quite early today. Today is the Winter Solstice, traditionally the day that marks the shortest day of the year. Sure this means we don't get a lot of sunshine today, but on the plus side the Solstice marks the time when the days begin to get longer. However, though today is the Solstice, the actual shortest day of 2012 will be tomorrow. According to timeanddate.com the December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. It is normally on Dec. 21, but the actual shortest day can be between Dec. 20 and 23 depending on the year. According to sunrisesunset.com, the shortest day of the year in this area will be on Dec. 22. On that day the sun will rise at 7:12 a.m. and set at 4:15 p.m. …

When Will the Days Begin to Get Longer?

You ask, Patch answers. When can we expect longer days?

Winter can be tough on the emotions. The cold weather can be difficult to deal with, snow can be a pain (though also fun) but what really seems to get people down is the short days. There is something about the sun going down before most people get out of work that is depressing. So when can we expect longer days? The days will begin to get longer after the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year.  According to timeanddate.com the December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees is normally on Dec. 21, but the actual shortest day can be between Dec. 20 and 23 depending on the year. Time to Change Clocks, and Batteries in Your Smoke Detector

State Fire Marshal urges residents to change the battery in their smoke detectors this weekend.

Massachusetts State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan urged people to think about safety when they change their clocks for Daylight Saving, Sunday: “Remember that on Sunday, March 13, when you change your clocks, change your batteries," said State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan. “Every second weekend in March, we turn the clocks ahead one hour. This is a good time to change the batteries in our smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,” Coan continued. “March is one of the months where many fatal fires occur. They happen where we feel safest – at home – and at night when most people are sleeping. Making sure the smoke alarms are working is a simple, effective way to help your family survive an unexpected fire." “A working smoke alarm can double your …
