Lahey Clinic Offering Flu Clinics as Number of Cases Spikes

Lahey Clinic will be administering flu vaccines this weekend.

Lahey Clinic is offering two flu clinics this weekend as reports of a worse-than-usual flu season emerge in the media. The Burlington Board of Health posted on its web site that has "has been informed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) that influenza numbers are on the rise." The Washington Post reported that Boston declared a public health emergency this past Wednesday after 18 flu-related deaths were reported so far. Lahey Clinic's flu clinics: Flu clinics are available at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, on Saturday, January 12, and Sunday, January 13, from 8 am to noon. Lahey Clinic Offering Free Lung Cancer Screening for Veterans

Burlington's Director of Veteran Affairs Robert Hogan says veterans are at higher risk for lung cancer, so the screening is available for early detection.

The following is a release from Burlington's Director of Veteran Affairs Robert Hogan: The Burlington Office of Veterans Services wants to inform Burlington veterans that the Lahey Clinic is offering Free Lung Cancer CT Screenings to eligible, qualified veterans.  Why? Because the incidence of lung cancer is higher among veterans, and the survival rate among veterans is lower than the civilian population. Studies indicate that mortality rate is higher for veterans. Two million World War-2 and Korean War veterans died an average 11.1 years sooner than their civilian counterparts. When you add in Agent Orange for Vietnam veterans and the uranium related issues for Gulf War veterans, it is clear that early screening and detection is necessary…

Breast Cancer Support Groups in Burlington

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here's a list of local breast cancer support groups.

One in 8 American women and 1 in 1,000 American men will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups. Lahey Clinic hosts a Breast Cancer support group on the first Wednesday of every month starting at 6 p.m. in the Cancer Center, 3W Conference Room. New Walkers Progams Kicking Off at Burlington Mall.

The Burlington Mall and Lahey Clinic are teaming up for a fall walking program at the mall.

Enjoy walking for exercise and looking for a way to stay in shape even as the weather turns bad? The Burlington Mall has partnered with Lahey Clinic to launch an innovative, new Mall Walkers Program to promote health and wellness starting today at 8:00 am. The community is invited to lace up their walking shoes and join Lahey’s staff, Burlington’s town officials, Burlington Mall Management and fellow striders to kick off the Mall Walkers Program on September 18. Lahey Clinic's Walk Against Cancer Garners $200k

Last Saturday's Cancer Walk and 5k Walk was a huge success despite the rain.

The participants of the 2012 Burlington Relay for Life weren't the only ones to brave the rain to help fight cancer last weekend. On Saturday, June 2, Lahey Clinic held its annual Cancer Walk in Burlington and Peabody. The event also featured a 5K run at the Burlington clinic. Despite cold weather, strong winds and lots of rain, there was a great turnout and spirits were high. Over 1,100 people registered for the Walk helping raise over $200,000.00 this year.  "Lahey Clinic is extremely grateful to everyone who helped make this year a success!," a release states.
