Burlington Police Detail Events of Man With Umbrella Mistaken for Gunman at Burlington Mall

All threats must be taken seriously, Burlington Chief states.

The Burlington Police Department has put out a release detailing today's events and how a man with an umbrella caused multiple departments, including the Massachusetts State Police, to begin a search for a possible gunman at the Burlington Mall. According the release, at approximately 10:02 a.m. today, April 19, the Burlington Police Department received a call from Burlington Mall Security who reported that there was a white male subject dressed in all black clothing that appeared to be carrying a rifle and had just entered the lower level bathroom in the Nordstrom’s store. Man at Burlington Mall Had Umbrella, Not Gun

The Massachusetts State Police have confirmed that the man originally believed to have a gun at the Burlington Mall had an umbrella

At around noon today the Massachusetts State Police confirmed the man originally believed to possibly have a gun in the Burlington Mall is not a threat. "The man in question called State Police from Lahey Clinic, where he reportedly is an employee, to say he was the person who was seen in the mall," a release from the Mass State Police says. "The call was taken by State Police Communications Center. Troopers and officers responded to the area of the Clinic and questioned him and determined he was not carrying a weapon and is not a threat." Police added the man's claim was verified by security tapes. "Witnesses and video surveillance confirm he is the person," the release states. "The situation is cleared."
