Incoming Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren will take office in January.
Massachusetts Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren has been chosen for a seat on the Senate's Banking Committee, according to the Huffington Post, which cited several sources. Warren, a Democrat who helped create the federal government's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, defeated incumbent Republican Senator Scott Brown in the November election. The battle for the 6th District seat is over.
Congressman John Tierney has defeated Republican challenger Richard Tisei in an extremely tight race for Massachusetts 6th District congressional seat. This has been an unusually high-profile congressional race in Massachusetts, which is considered a stronghold for House Democrats. Tierney suffered from the impact of a family scandal involving his wife, her brother and her brother’s illegal offshore gambling business. Tisei, on the other hand, climbed to popularity with his aggressive campaign, his theme of bipartisanship and his years of serving in the state legislature. A look at how Burlington voted race-by-race yesterday.
Burlington residents came out in force to vote in yesterday's election. According to Town Clerk Amy Warfield a total of 13,409, or 85 percent, of the total 15,149 eligible voters. The town did not go with any party. President Barack Obama took the majority of Burlington votes but the ticket was split for the senate race and Scott Brown beat out Elizabeth Warren in town. Warren did end up carrying the state. In the 21st Middlesex District State Representative race, Burlington did give the majority to home-town candidate Walter Zenkin over Bedford's Ken Gordon, but not by a big majority. With a majority of town reporting the race is being called for Kenneth Donnelly.
State Sen. Ken Donnelly, D-Arlington, has been re-elected by district voters to continue to represent the Fourth Middlesex District based on the towns that have reported thus far. The district includes the towns of Arlington, Woburn, Lexington, Burlington and Billerica. At this time Woburn, Burlington and Arlington have reported the results of the state senator's re-election bid against Republican challenger Gerry Dembrowski. In Woburn Donnelly took 10,065 votes versus Dembrowski's 6,989. In Burlington he won 7,310 to 4,769. In Lexington, Donnelly tallied 8,239 votes to Dembrowski's 2,664. And in his hometown of Arlington he took a whopping 19,292 to 4,283. Billerica had not reported results at the time of this report. Donnelly was first …

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. Barack Obama won Massachusetts' 11 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Big number of voters came out earlier today to cast ballot.
Burlington High School is abuzz with politics today. Residents have turned out in droves to cast ballots. This morning saw high voter turn-out with an average of 1,000 voters per hours. There was a long line of cars and the high school gymnasium was humming with people supporting their candidates of choice. Outside the school supporters of the different candidates held signs and tried to drum up enthusiasm. Candidates were also on scene welcoming voters and shaking hands. Roughly 1,000 people per hour have been coming to vote.
Burlington residents are coming in droves to cast their votes in today's national elections. Cars are backing up down Cambridge Street as residents head to Burlington High School to vote. Police are providing traffic detail and though the line is long, it is moving smoothly. Inside the polls the lines are also moving along, thanks mostly to the good organization of the Burlington Town Clerk's office. There are also high school student volunteers on hand to help residents find their district and voting line.
