Selectmen Consider New Site for Fire Station 2

The site may sound familiar, it's the parcel previously considered for a new DPW and Recreation Department building.

The Burlington Board of Selectmen discussed placing Fire Station 2 in the "Clark & Reid" site originally considered for a new Department of Public Works and Recreation Department building. The issue came up while discussing warrant articles for the upcoming May 13 Town Meeting. Town Administrator John Petrin said there will be an article allowing the town to use already-allocated funds for a due diligence study related to the purchase of the property. In the January, 2012 Town Meeting, members voted to approve up to $80,000 to fund a due diligence study for two properties for the DPW and Recreation Department. The property in question is located off the corner of Middlesex Turnpike and Meadow Road (see map at right). The site is actually …

Fire Department: Hazmat at Keurig Building Last Night

There was a vapor cloud of liquid nitrogen filling the air around the building for the incoming Keurig Headquarters last night.

Burlington Fire Department personnel responded to a hazardous material situation at the building for the new Keurig headquarters at 63 South Avenue last night. Chief Steve Yetman said the call came in around 9:30 p.m. of a vapor cloud forming in the rear of the building. Emergency crews, led by Captain Scott Carpenter, assessed the situation and determined that the cloud was liquid nitrogen, which Yetman said is a cryogenic liquid with a temperature of -375 degrees. Yetman said the vapor cloud made approximately a 50-foot circle around the tank. He added that tanks that hold gases such as liquid nitrogen have a safety release if the pressure builds up too much. He said fire fighters believe that was the case here. "That's what the tanks …

Emergency responders helped bring a healthy baby girl into the world.

Two members of the Burlington Fire Department responded to a call that they will never forget last week. At 2 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, the Burlington Fire Department received an ambulance request for a woman going into labor on Seven Springs Lane. The plan was to take the lady and her husband to the hospital where the baby could be delivered in a hospital bed surrounded by doctors and nurses. However, the baby girl had other plans. Apparently she was in a hurry to meet her new parents. "The baby wouldn't wait," explained firefighter and medical responder Eric Fitzgerald, who responded to the scene with fellow Burlington Fire Department member Craig Callahan, along with Mike Naughton and Terri Pallis of Armstrong Ambulance Service.  "After…

There was a house fire in a vacant home at 30 Hampden Street last night.

Members of the Burlington Fire Department were busy last night putting out an early-morning blaze on Hampden Avenue. The Burlington Board of Selectmen honored Firefighters David and Paul Sullivan who both recently retired after a combined 58 years on the job.

It was a packed house at Monday night's Board of Selectmen meeting as fellow firefighters, friends and family members came out to honor two firefighter brothers who both recently retired from the Burlington Fire Department. Assistant Fire Chief Michael Patterson explained that while the police department has traditionally brought retiring or recently retired members before the board for recognition of service, the fire department has not normally done so. Patterson said he and Chief Steven Yetman recently decided to change that and give retirees this honor. "We thought it was a great idea and we wanted to continue that tradition in the fire department," Patterson told the board. "We introduce you to our new hires and we thought we would …
