Letter: A Veterans Day Thank You

A letter to the editor from Robert Hogan and Betty McDonough from the office of Burlington Veteran Affairs.

The Burlington Office of Veterans Services wishes to thank you and everyone for joining us for this year’s Veterans Day ceremonies which took place on Sunday, November 11, 2012 in commemoration of and in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War and the 30th anniversary of the dedication of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall) in Washington, on Veterans Day 1982. We were very pleased with the number of guests that joined us on the Town Common and with the visitors we had at the presentation of “Items Left at the Wall.” On display were items from when the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall Memorial spent eight days on the Town Common in 1999. The Importance of Saying 'Thank You' to Veterans

It's the job of parents to teach their children to thank members of the armed forces for their service.

  As moms we all know how much we have to be thankful for. Our children’s health, a safe community to live in, a school system where students can learn and grow all top most moms’ lists.  What we don’t always think about, however, is why all of these things are possible.  As moms we work hard to drill the words “Thank You” into our children’s’ heads but, alas, we often forget to use it ourselves. We don’t always think about how lucky we are to have our freedom and to live in a nation where we can raise our children with confidence that they, too, will always be free. Simply put, we don’t always take the time to look around us and acknowledge the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom. One of the most important …

Burlington will honor past and current military personnel who have proudly served our nation in battle with a special Veterans Day ceremony this morning. Burlington Honoring Veterans this Sunday

The town's annual Veterans Day program will be held at 9 a.m. on the Town Commons.

The following is a release from Burlington's Director of Veteran Affairs Robert Hogan: The Burlington Office of Veterans Services wishes to invite everyone to our 2012 Veterans Day program this Sunday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m., on the Burlington Town Common. The theme this year is honoring and remembering Vietnam veterans, as this is the beginning year of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. In 1962 the first combat missions against the Vietcong occurred when in Operation Chopper, helicopters flown by US Army pilots began to ferry South Vietnamese troops to sweep the enemy’s stronghold near Saigon. Our guest speaker for the day will be Chaplain (Colonel) Bill Mark from the E.N. Rogers VA Hospital in Bedford. He was with us when the Moving …

IMAGE GALLERY: Burlington Honors Veterans with Morning Service

Last Friday hundreds gathered on the Burlington Town Commons to honor our country's Veterans of the Armed Services and thank them for their service.

Burlington residents, town leaders, state representatives and veterans gathered on the Town Commons last Friday, Veterans Day, to pay tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. The program was put together by Burlington's Office of Veteran Affairs and featured a flag raising ceremony, variety of speakers, placements of wreaths on memorials to fallen soldiers and police and veteran color guards. The Burlington High School Marching Band provided stirring patriotic accompanyments and Joseph McGrath played movingly on the bag pipes. State Sen. Kenneth Donnelly began his remarks thanking Robert Hogan, Director of Burlington's Office of Veteran Services and Betty McDonough, Principal Clerk of the office, for their work in …

Burlington Honors Veterans With Special Service

Hundreds of residents came out to honor the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces on Veterans Day morning.

This morning many Burlington residents gathered on the Town Commons to honor United States Veterans of foreign conflicts. Burlington's Office of Veterans Affairs presented a Veterans Day service that included a flag-raising ceremony, music by the Burlington High School Band, moving speeches by veterans and words from local political leaders.
