Track Teams Win Four Events at League Championships

Boys' sweep two-mile, mile, 1,000-meter, while Erin Rielly takes 1,000 for the girls'.

The Burlington High boys’ indoor track team’s middle- and long-distance runners proved to be the class of the Middlesex League Wednesday, winning the two-mile, mile and 1,000-meter races at the league’s individual championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. Overall, the boys’ team had nine top-three finishes in the meet, which was not scored, while the girls’ had three, including a first place finish in the 1,000 and a second in the two-mile. Junior David Taranto got things going for the Red Devils by taking the mile, the meet’s first event, by more than 10 seconds in 4 minutes, 26.54 seconds. Taranto’s time is the league’s fastest so far this season. He also held the previous mark of 4:33.39. Finishing behind …

A look back at the week that was in Burlington Athletics

Many of the Burlington High School winter sports teams were in action this past week to kick off the New Year. Let’s take a look back at some of the results as the team’s got going in 2011. Hoops Both the boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Belmont High School Tuesday night to take on the host Marauders in double-header action. Unfortunately the Red Devils went 0-2 on the night as both teams were dealt losses. The Boys came just short as they fell to Belmont 67-65. Zach Hurynowicz and Shane Farley paced the Red Devils. The girls’ game was a bit more one-sided as the Red Devils lost 52-38 and remain winless on the season. Read the recap for both games here. Burlington Pride Basketball - Games for Adults with Disabilities

Burlington Pride Basketball is a volunteer group dedicated to teaching people with disabilities ages 16 and up the game of basketball. Program Director Mark Landers details the group.

Burlington Pride Basketball meets weekly on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Memorial School gym and involves disabled persons 16-years-old and over with the game of basketball. Pride instructors teach passing, dribbling, shooting and other fundamental basketball skills during it's 90 minute sessions. The sessions are taught by an all volunteer team and are open to Burlington residents and out-of-towners alike. “I started it in 2004. There was something before then but nothing as formal as we have today,” recalls Mark Landers, Program Director for Burlington Pride Basketball. When asked what Pride offers Burlington residents, Landers responded, “it offers them social interaction with their peers and teaches them sportsmanship.” …
