My Parenting Resolutions for 2012

This year, make a resolution that helps your whole family.

With the new year just around the corner, quite literally, I found myself in a reflective mood when I sat down to write this week’s column. New Year’s Resolutions were on my mind, as they may be on yours as well.  In the past, I’ve promised myself many efforts at self-improvement, from losing weight to stressing less. But this year, I thought I’d think less about myself and more about how I can impact my family. .  I mean, nobody is perfect. And the new year gives us the perfect excuse to think about these ways we aren’t perfect in a constructive way.  I found myself wondering if there are resolutions I can make that help me to be a better parent and person. Turns out, once I got thinking about it, I found lots of places to focus my …

Hitting, biting, and shoving, OH MY!

Dealing with toddler agression during the onset of the terrible twos.

Our son’s daycare provider was on vacation recently. Although it had only been a week, when she returned (to the great relief of kids and parents alike), it felt as if Desmond had grown up overnight. He was so excited to show her all his new adorable toddler tricks as soon as we walked in the door. Unfortunately one of his new tricks is not so adorable. Getting the full report at pick-up time, she very kindly and judiciously let us know that Des is starting to “assert his will” with the other kids.  This involves pushing, shoving, and hitting. Where did my sweet, timid, angelic baby go? As our beloved caretaker reassured us, this kind of behavior is completely normal for his age. Over the past few weeks we’ve gotten more than one report …

Battles Over Broccoli

Trying to feed a picky eater.

Have you heard the rumor about toddlers throwing tantrums? Exerting their will? Wanting what they want NOW? Turns out these endearing tendencies are true to life.  No matter how mild-mannered and sweet your child is (and aren’t they all?), toddlers are bound to make their will known in foot-stomping, ear-piercing ways. For us, and for many other parents, these tantrums are often felt at the dinner table. As recently as a few months ago our son was eating an array of vegetables with little fuss, and no masking necessary. And before that he would try new foods with gusto. Nowadays he is making his preferences known.  Although he still eats with an eagerness that makes me fear our future grocery bills, it is only the foods that he wants at …

Baby Steps, Toddler Leaps

Learn when your baby will start hitting these major milestones.

It seems like only yesterday that my little lady could neither walk nor talk, couldn't crawl or use a spoon by herself.  She didn't do much at all really, and parenting had a very different definition in those early days.  Today, my job of "keeping the baby alive and healthy" on a day-to-day basis looks much more hectic. Back then, we mostly sat around and napped and ate and changed diapers. Ahh, those were the days! Now, we're racing through those milestones like crazy, learning new words everyday, trying fun new foods, and developing fun new talents... like climbing on the couch. And jumping off the couch.  I once thought it would take forever to get here, but we've made it... one milestone at a time. So, new parents, when can you expect…

Bringing up Beach Baby

Packing lists and tips for family fun at the beach... It can be worth all the schlepping!

Some of my favorite childhood memories start with packing up the car and heading to the coast with family and friends.  Summer time meant jumping over waves, searching for sea shells, and poking around in tide pools.  My love for the beach has only grown into adulthood and I hope it will extend to my kids, so we can create many more memories in the sand and sea. We took our son to the beach last year (i.e. a million years ago) when he was just a squirmy little baby.  Now that he is a full-fledged toddler, the equipment is a little different but the considerations are the same: keeping him cool and shielded from the sun, entertained, and sustained. I remember fondly the days going to the beach with only a towel and a book in hand.  Now that…

Getting Over the Yucky Stuff

How parenthood can give the most squeamish person a stomach of steel.

I am easily grossed out.  Bouts of nausea have been known to come on suddenly in the presence of messy food, bodily fluids, or unpleasant odors.  Needless to say, in my pre-parent days I had always been a bit jittery around kids, who are notorious for embodying all of the previously mentioned icky things. Ask my sisters.  They love to remind me of the times I would wrinkle my nose and point, uttering “Ew,” when some slimy substance had taken residence on their child’s face.  Or the times I would scoff at the prospect of changing a poopy diaper.  So when they heard I was to become a mom, I’m sure they secretly chuckled to themselves knowing firsthand what was in my future. My oh my, how quickly things have changed. It took parenthood to …

To Love A Lovey

Forming attachments to a special toy is an important step of development.

My daughter’s been mobile for a few months now, even venturing into a run when she gets the proper motivation. And the more she ventures away from me, the more I’ve noticed she is reluctant to leave me behind.  Her new “independence” brings with it some fears, including the first inklings of separation anxiety. It’s all normal, it’s all part of growing up, and it’s something we’ll have to work through together. One of the best things to help toddlers learn independence is the “lovey” toy – a blanket, doll, or other stuffed animal that brings comfort and security to your child.  What’s The Deal with Lovey Toys? Between the ages of 1 and 2, lots of changes are happening for your little one. A constant symbol of comfort makes it easier to …

Loveys are lovely! My daughter still has hers and I still have mine. Both dolls have been through the wringer - and several "surgeries" - but they still bring a smile to us every time we look at them!   more ›

Big Girls Don't Nap

Conquering the great nap time debate with your toddler.

This week, my darling daughter decided that her two-naps-a-day routine needed a shakeup.  Specifically, she informed me with several temper tantrums that naps are optional in our house.  Since I didn’t get that memo, we’ve been debating the issue four days running now.  It’s doing wonders for my blood pressure, you know? Naps are important, though, and not just because mommy needs some quiet time.  According to an article in Parents magazine, toddlers are racing through development stages and sleep is necessary.  Most pediatricians recommend about 10-12 hours of sleep each night, with an extra 1-2 hours of naptime during the day.  Whether that’s one nap or two seems to depend on your toddler, but a nap is important all the same. Now, in no…

Handy Helpers for Mommies on the Go

Make life easier with some of these handy gadgets in your diaper bag.

Now that it’s warmer outside (finally!), I find myself much more on-the-go with my toddler.  Day trips, picnics, running errands all day with the windows rolled down, talking nice walks to the playground… you name it, we’re up for it.  Call it Spring Fever, or whatever you will, but I’ve become much more of a Mommy on the Go since that snow finally melted. And as such, I’ve come to rely heavily on a number of handy products that make “mobile parenting” easier.  If you’re living out of a diaper bag for a few hours or more at a time, you’ve got to think of everything before you leave the house.  So I’ve taken to leaving a pre-packed bag handy at all times, stocked with the essentials: diapers, wipes, an extra outfit, an extra pacifier, and a…
