Last Chance: Share Your Thoughts with Your Town Meeting Reps

The May Town Meeting kicks off tonight.

The May Town Meeting starts at Burlington High School at 7:30 p.m. this evening. There are 44 articles on the warrant that Town Meeting members will vote on, including some decisions. Do you have an opinion on one or more of the warrant articles that you would like to convey to your Town Meeting representatives? Perhaps you have a position on the proposed zoning change to allow a Target store to come to town, or a thought on the Tax Increment Financing proposal for the Keurig headquarters. Whatever it is, take this opportunity to reach out to your precinct's representatives and be heard. To find out how to reach your Town Meeting representatives, you can find a complete list, courtesy of the Town Clerk's office, in the PDFs attached to …

Letter: In Support of Target/Canyon Project from Local Business Owner

A letter to the editor from Town Meeting member Jim Patterson, owner of Static Clean International, Inc.

The following is a letter to the editor: To the Editor: As a forty-seven year resident of the Burlington community, a Town Meeting Member and owner of a Burlington based business, I write today to express my support for the Gutierrez Company’s proposal to rezone the Canyon site and to implement long overdue traffic improvements to the Middlesex Turnpike corridor.  My business (Static Clean International, Inc.) is located at 15 Adams Street in Burlington. I live roughly two and a half miles from my business and yet on a routine basis I have to travel more than seven miles and through two neighboring communities (Bedford and Lexington) to cut down the amount of time I spend driving to or from my office.  This section of Middlesex Turnpike …

Read the Transcript of Our Live Chat with Scott Weiss on the Proposed Target Project

Gutierrez Project Manager Scott Weiss answered questions from readers live at 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

Click the Cover-It-Live widget above to read the full discussion of the live chat with Scott Weiss, Gutierrez Project Manager for the proposed Target project. Weiss answered questions from readers and from Patch Editor Rich Hosford. The background on the project is that in the fall of 2010 the Gutierrez Company entered an agreement to potentially purchase the 15.3 acre piece of state-owned land that located adjacent to Wheeler Road and near the Middlesex Turnpike from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, often referred to as the Canyon Site. Gutierrez determined the piece of land would be ideal for a retail location eventually began discussions with Target. The plan calls for a Target location, owned by the retailer, and an …

Letter to the Editor: Can Two Wrongs Become One Right?

A letter to the editor on the proposed Canyon Project and DPW/Recreation move.

The following is a letter to the editor: The Burlington Town meeting will soon have to confront two bad projects.  Fortunately, if the members turn down both requests, we will have the opportunity to ask decision makers for a bit more imagination and a lot more forward thinking next time. The Canyon project promises the town a great deal of headache for very little in return.  Canyon sales literature estimates that their 165,000 square foot retail development will generate $1 million in new net tax revenue.  At the same time, the Keurig tax abatement proposal on the same Warrant, which has gone through a much more detailed evaluation process, says that a 445,000 square foot headquarters building will generate $1 million in tax revenues.  I…

Have Questions on Target Proposal? Ask Those Who Know During Live Blog

Burlington Patch will feature a live discussion with Scott Weiss of the Gutierrez Company, the developer behind the proposed Target plan at the Canyon Site, this Thursday at 6 p.m.

The proposed Target/Canyon Site plan put forward by the Gutierrez Company is one of the hottest issues in town right now. The next step for the proposal is a zoning change that will be before Town Meeting on May 14. In a recent vote the Burlington Planning Board voted 4-3 to recommend the warrant article be passed. Burlington Patch has worked hard to bring comprehensive coverage of this story since it first caught or attention and we've carried many stories on the subject (see below). However, we know we can't address every question readers may have. So what we decided to do was invite Gutierrez Project Manager Scott Weiss into a live blog and invite readers to ask their questions directly. Come to Burlington Patch this Thursday, May 10 …

I said “this might be our only chance”. We have been talking about the traffic problem down there for years. The State didn’t even have this on their radar until now. If this goes away and they give it to the next highest bidder. What is his plans? Maybe he keeps it RO and we get nothing in return.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: In Support of Target Project and Traffic Plan

A letter to the editor from new Town Meeting member Darlene Griffin, Precinct 2.

The following is a letter to the editor: To the Editor: As a new Town Meeting Member and long-time resident of Burlington, I write today in support of The Gutierrez Company’s proposal to rezone the Canyon site. While I see many benefits in developing the land, I’m most pleased to hear that Gutierrez will invest millions into fixing Middlesex Turnpike and that Target is interested in the property.   I continue to hear people in the community saying that they do not want another “big box” retailer like Target in Burlington.  However, why wouldn’t you welcome a reputable retailer such as Target?  It has an excellent standard for community giving, contributing a percentage of its profits to local programs and organizations. For example, Target…

Letter to the Editor: Canyon Project Best Chance for Traffic Improvements on Middlesex

A letter to the editor from Town Meeting member Gary B. Kasky.

As tax payers of Burlington, I think everyone should seriously consider the benefits of The Gutierrez Company’s Canyon project.  Specifically as it relates to getting traffic moving again on Middlesex Turnpike. Gutierrez is going to invest millions of dollars to widen portions of Middlesex Turnpike and address design issues that result in traffic congestion at the Wheeler Road and Adams Street intersections. In addition, they're going to do this before any development happens. Gutierrez  finally got Mass DOT at the table to help with this, not to mention fund an additional traffic study to guide further state investment after the initial improvements are made. There is a reason why almost every business owner on this stretch of Middlesex …

Letter: Target/Canyon Site Walk and Invitation (Video)

A letter to Town Meeting members from the Gutierrez Company with a video on the Canyon Site and an invitation to information sessions.

The following is a letter to Town Meeting members from the Gutierrez Company on the proposed Target project: Dear Town Meeting Members, Over the past few weeks, many of you have asked us questions related to the location and existing conditions of the Canyon property. In case you haven't had a chance to visit the site on your own, we invite you to take a virtual tour. Please watch our short video of the Canyon property led by Scott Weiss from The Gutierrez Company. As you will see, the development of this property is long overdue. The site, in its current state, is not pristine nor is it suitable for recreation or housing uses. On Saturday, May 5, The Gutierrez Company will host in-person site tours from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. If you would like…

Candidates for Board of Selectmen and Planning Board participated in a Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce debate Wednesday morning.

Candidates from the Board of Selectmen and Planning Board races met at New England Executive Park Wednesday morning for a final candidate forum, this one put on by the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce. The two main issues up for debate were economic development and the proposed Target on Wheeler Road. Patch will take a look at some of the dialogue from the forum in this post. Planning Board Jack Kelly and Board of Selectmen candidate Virginia Mooney were unable to attend this final debate, but they discussed the issues at hand in their Patch interviews. You can find Mooney's interview here and Kelly's here. The questions and discussion on economic development mostly centered around the Board of Selectmen candidates, incumbents Daniel …
