The Sunland Inc. plant that distributes products to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target, Safeway and others is linked to Salmonella contamination that made at least 41 people ill in 20 states.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Monday that it has blocked food distribution from the Sunland Inc. peanut butter plant in New Mexico whose products were subject to a wide recall in recent months because of salmonella contamination. The various types of Sunland peanut butter products—sold under several brands by major food retailers, including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target and Safeway—had been part of a voluntary recall that began in September and later was expanded to include other nut butters as well as processed nuts and peanuts. The FDA action announced Monday is a mandatory order. The company's nut products have been "linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney that has sickened 41 people in 20 states," …

Two types of treats are being recalled because of possible salmonella contamination.
Kasel Associated Industries is voluntarily recalling its Boots & Barkley Roasted American Pig Ears and Boots & Barkley American Variety Pack Dog Treats because of possible salmonella contamination. The products were distributed nationally through Target stores in August 2012, according to the FDA. According to the FDA: Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea …

The zoning change for the proposed Target/Canyon Site project was denied by Town Meeting last night.
After months of public consideration among the different town boards that deal with development, the controversial Canyon/Target project was before Town Meeting last night and the majority of members voted to deny the project. Members voted 39 in favor and 72 against the warrant article that called for a zoning change at the site off of Wheeler Road near the Middlesex Turnpike. The zoning change required a 2/3 majority but the article failed without even 50 percent of the Town Meeting votes. The background on the project is that in the fall of 2010 the Gutierrez Company entered an agreement to potentially purchase the 15.3 acre piece of state-owned land that located adjacent to Wheeler Road and near the Middlesex Turnpike from the …

A letter from Edens Senior Project Manager Keith Hague on the proposed Target and traffic mitigation plan.
The following is a letter from Edens (owner of Middlesex Commons) Edens Senior Project Manager Keith Hague shared by The Gutierrez Company. Find the original here. As owners of the Middlesex Commons Shopping Center we have completed a thorough review of all plans, reports and analysis provided to us by your traffic engineer VHB. After further review of this data by our own traffic engineer, MDM Transportation, as well as follow up review meetings with yourself and VHB, we feel the proposed traffic mitigation measures will be a significant improvement to the traffic flow along Middlesex Turnpike. With the additional directional signage we discussed for Old Concord Road, we are confident that these measures will improve access and traffic …
A letter to the editor from John Mitchell.
To the editor: With Town Meeting quickly approaching, I wanted to take a moment to express my support for the Gutierrez Company’s proposal to develop the Canyon site. I’ve lived in Burlington for eighteen years and have long waited for the day Middlesex Turnpike south of Route 128 would undergo serious improvements. It looks as if that time has finally come. and it’s the Canyon project that will get us there. As part of its request to May Town Meeting to rezone the Canyon property, The Gutierrez Company has agreed to invest millions of dollars into traffic improvements along Middlesex Turnpike, including widening the lanes, improving signaling, realigning intersections and more. After learning about the Canyon proposal and talking to the …

Town Meeting will take up the zoning change for the proposed Canyon/Target project first thing Monday evening.
Update: Selectman Walter Zenkin informed Patch today that the Board of Selectmen will take up the question as to whether or not to recommend for or against this project to Town Meeting during a session at 7 p.m. Monday at Burlington High School. He said the reason he abstained (see below) last week rather than voting when the issue was brought up was because it wasn't on the agenda. Original story: Town Meeting members will face a big and long-anticipated decision after hearing from proponents and opponents of the proposed Target project off of Wheeler Road on Monday. The background on the project is that in the fall of 2010 the Gutierrez Company entered an agreement to potentially purchase the 15.3 acre piece of state-owned land that …
