On Saturday the team fell, 2-1, to Grafton in the Division 2 state championship game. While the Red Devils ended their campaign one win shy of the program’s first ever state title, head coach Kristen Mahoney said it was a season she will remember for a long time. “It was a tough loss, but the message after the game was that we had an excellent season,” said Mahoney. “We had such a great group of girls. Quite honestly, it was just sad to see it end. It was a great, great season and these girls played so well together.” Mahoney’s charges beat Swampscott, Dracut, Amesbury and Tewksbury to win …

Burlington Softball Holds on to Win North Crown

The Red Devils allowed Tewksbury some life in the final frame, but snagged a 6-5 win on Monday to advance to the Division 2 state semifinal round.

With two outs in the top of the seventh and her team clinging to a one-run lead with the tying run on third base, Burlington High School softball coach yelled from the dugout to her team, asking how tough they are. Her team's actions spoke louder than its words, and the answer was obvious. The Red Devils nearly lost a 6-1 lead, allowing one run in the sixth and three in the seventh before bouncing back to record the final out against Tewksbury to earn the North Division 2 championship. "I asked them how tough they are. They proved that they are very tough," said Mahoney. "I think last year's team would have folded in that situation. But this year we're really strong mentally, so that helps." Thanks to the victory, Burlington advanced to …

That alone brings positive change. We could use more coaches like her at the high school for she brings out the best in her athletes, something that other coaches could learn by. Congratulations to the …   more ›
