Oldies but Goodies: Classic Toys Remain Hot Holiday Buys

Local toy store relies on quality and classics, not trends.

There may not be a Furby this holiday season or a Tickle Me Elmo, a toy that drives parents mad and gives children carpal tunnel writing countless letters to Santa, but even if there were, Rick Henry, owner of Stellabella Toys, wouldn't be overly concerned. "We don't play in the same arena as Toys 'R' Us, Wal-Mart and Target," he said recently. "We're a specialty toy store. We try to offer things that we consider to be quality, classic, more educational but also fun." Henry, a Cambridge resident, bought a toy store in Cambridge's Inman Square in 1999 and renamed it Stellabella Toys. Holiday Shopping Season Has Arrived

Expect heavy traffic at Burlington Mall and Wayside Commons until New Year's.

With Black Friday having come and gone, the holiday shopping season has hit, and it hits few communities harder each year than Burlington. The number of consumers it draws to town each year is hard to predict, according to Jim Murphy, president and CEO of the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, but one thing is for certain – the Burlington Mall and the nearby Wayside Commons shopping area are sure to be packed, he said. "Those two venues do a number of things to make [the holiday shopping season] more festive," he said. At the Burlington Mall, for instance, in addition to the decorations and old St. Nick, the local nonprofit People Helping People has a "Wish Tree" that links shoppers with needy families.
