Santa and Father Christmas, who looks surprisingly like a Burlington resident, chat with Patch
His bushy eyebrows are white; so are his moustache, beard and long, flowing hair. His hand-made long cape is a rich red. But no red cap. No belly like a bowl full of jelly. No hearty "Ho, ho, ho's." Burlington's annual tree-lighting ceremony was well attended, despite chilly temperatures. Director of Maintenance Doug Gillingham said the tradition was first started in 1970 by Paul Arsenault, who donated a homemade holiday display of carol singers to the town. Now celebrating its 40th year, the original display has recently been restored by his son, Fred. This year, trees around the common were lit with about 45,000 lights – half of which are energy-efficient LED lights. This year Santa arrived aboard a vintage firetruck. In past years, he has been lowered to the ground on pulley ropes, rode in on a sleigh and even came on horseback.
