The Sunland Inc. plant that distributes products to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target, Safeway and others is linked to Salmonella contamination that made at least 41 people ill in 20 states.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Monday that it has blocked food distribution from the Sunland Inc. peanut butter plant in New Mexico whose products were subject to a wide recall in recent months because of salmonella contamination. The various types of Sunland peanut butter products—sold under several brands by major food retailers, including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target and Safeway—had been part of a voluntary recall that began in September and later was expanded to include other nut butters as well as processed nuts and peanuts. Libertyville, IL-based KidCo Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 220,000 PeaPod and PeaPod Plus Travel Beds following a baby's death and numerous reports of infants becoming entrapped, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said. The recall affects 220,000 PeaPod and PeaPod Plus Travel Beds, the CPSC said. Infants and young children can roll off the edge of the inflatable air mattress, become entrapped between the mattress and the fabric sides of the tent, and suffocate, according to a release. Consumers should immediately stop using the tents and contact KidCo to get a free repair kit. The kits will vary depending on the model and will be shipped to consumers starting in December 2012. Information from the Food and Drug Administration: Nestlé USA announced the voluntary recall of limited quantities of Nestlé NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder in the 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce canisters. The voluntary recall is limited to only NESQUIK Chocolate Powder, which was distributed nationally. No other varieties of NESQUIK powder or any sizes or flavors of NESQUIK ready-to-drink are affected by this recall. Nestlé is removing the canisters from distribution because the company was notified by an ingredient supplier, Omya Inc. that it has issued a recall of certain lots of its ingredient, calcium carbonate due to possible presence of Salmonella. Company has removed house brand off the shelves and offered refunds to customers.
Trader Joe’s corporate officials say they are acting “out of an abundance of caution” and ordering the recall of one type of its house brand peanut butter over salmonella concerns. “Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” should not be eaten, the specialty grocery chain said. “We have no confirmed information that suggests this peanut butter is unsafe to eat,” the company stated.
