Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian was inaugurated at Bentley University in Waltham on Feb. 13.
Before he detailed plans to improve his agency, Peter J. Koutoujian was sworn into his first elected term as Middlesex County Sheriff on Wednesday, Feb. 13. In front of a large audience of family, colleagues and friends, Koutoujian, a life-long Waltham resident and former state representative for the city, took the oath of office during a 4 p.m. ceremony at the LaCava Center at Bentley University. Koutoujian was elected to the post in November 2012 to fill the remaining four years of a six-year term. Gov. Deval Patrick appointed Koutoujian in late 2010 after former sheriff James DiPaola took his own life. Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian is organizing efforts to improve support programs for corrections officers.
Corrections officers face many dangers in their work environment, but none may be more serious than the stresses they endure from years of working in such an extreme setting. To improve the health and wellness of corrections officers nationwide, the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office is launching a campaign to better support officers who feel the heavy burden of their jobs. One part of the effort will be a conference to share ways to assist corrections officers facing mental or physical job-related stresses, according to the Sheriff's Office. The conference will host experts from across the country to discuss the causes and consequences stemming from a prison work environment. The sheriff's officer was pressuring an inmate for money and drugs and conducted a drug transaction with an undercover state trooper, according to the district attorney's office.
A sergeant with the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department was found guilty Wednesday on charges that he received money and cocaine from an undercover state trooper, according to a press release from the Middlesex County District Attorney's office. Michael Dell'Isola, 52, of Somerville, was found guilty after a six-day jury trial in Middlesex Superior Court, the press release says. According to a statement from Middlesex County District Attorney Gerard Leone, "This defendant abused his position of authority by participating in illegal drug activities while on duty as a sergeant in the Middlesex Sheriff's Department." Update: July 25, at 3 p.m. Correction Officer Edward “Teddy” Dillon III of the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office was killed Wednesday morning in a single car crash in Billerica, according to a press release. A Lowell resident, Dillion was 27 and had served with the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office since 2008. A senior deputy sheriff in the Middlesex Sheriff's Office paid a $5,000 fine after admitting to soliciting donations for a campaign fundraiser for then-Sheriff James DiPaola from subordinate office employees during work hours, a violation of the state's conflict of interest law, the State Ethics Commission announced in a press release. According to a disposition agreement in which Michael Jackson admitted to the violation, the Ethic Commission said, Jackson decided to hold a campaign fundraiser for DiPaola in October 2009 and then solicited Middlesex Sheriff's Office employees, most of whom were his subordinates, at the office during work hours.
