Patch Snap: Marshall Simonds' New Basketball Team

Patch Snap is an occasional post that features pictures from around Burlington or Burlington residents out and about.

Welcome to another edition of Patch Snap, where we highlight a picture or pictures of around Burlington or of Burlington residents out and about. Today's Patch Snap picture comes from Kim Münch, who wrote: This is the first year that the Marshall Simonds Middle School has its very own basketball team - named "BOOM" it is comprised of 6,7 and 8th graders. Burlington BOOM is coached by Mark Melanson. The boys hold practices three times a week and compete into two different leagues, often playing four games each week, so its a big commitment for these athletes. To date [Editor note: at leasy as of Feb. 4], they are undefeated in the Middle School league and have an outstanding record in their travel league of 29-4. Check out a picture of the …

Kudos to Mark for starting this program, it is long overdue. Maybe someone could do the same for the girls. Most other communities have a middle school sports program that is missing in Burlington. We rely upon the Baseball/Softaball, Pop Warner, Soccer, Hockey and other independent programs to carry the load, which often can be a lot more expensive.   more ›

Marshall Simonds Construction Project On Schedule

New kitchen will come on line January 2012

The addition and renovation of Burlington’s Marshall Simonds Middle School is well underway. This week, Patch met with architect Kevin Buckley of KBA Architects for an update on the project.  According to Buckley, the project is on schedule to be completed by September 2013, but some phases of the project will come on line before that date. “We have completed renovations in four classrooms already,” said Buckley. According to Principal Richard Connors, the first rooms to be renovated were those in the Learning Center and they were completed in early November. Currently, three seventh grade classes are being under construction. When completed, the classrooms have new floors, walls, ceilings, shelving and lighting. Eventually, each classroom…

School Committee Answers Questions on Coach Training

School committee hears from a concerned parent on inadequate coaches’ training, professional misconduct and noise pollution.

A tense School Committee found itself playing defense Tuesday night as it addressed issues of inadequate coaches’ training, professional misconduct and noise pollution. The big issue of the evening was the issue of coaches’ training. The issue was first raised by parent Keven Russell two weeks ago at the previous school committee meeting. Russell was in attendance on Tuesday to hear a report from Superintendent of Schools, Eric Conti. Conti explained that while the MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) regulates basic training and sports specific training for coaches, the only training required by the State of Massachusetts is concussion training.  Conti went on to say that the school district provides concussion …

Marshall Simonds Middle School Renovations Underway

An update from the project's architect and contractor.

As Burlington prepares to demolish the old Memorial School building, the Town has already begun the daunting task of renovating the Marshall Simonds Middle School across the street. The addition and renovation project is expected to cost nearly $33 million with over $17 million coming from a state grant.  Kevin Buckley of KBA Architects served as the architect for the Memorial School project and will serve in the same role on the middle school project. KBA specializes in renovations and Buckley stated that he is confident that the project will be completed as scheduled by September 2013.  The project includes a 37,000-square-foot addition, which will be completed by summer 2012, according to Buckley. The new wing will include …

School Committee Reviews Improvement Plan for Marshall Simond

Middle school to provide leveled math classes in seventh grade.

Principal Richard Connors presented his school improvement plan for Marshall Simonds Middle School to the School Committee on Tuesday, June 28.  The plan was met with praise from the School Committee and Superintendent Eric Conti. Conti noted that in light of the construction project at the middle school, Connors could have chosen a less ambitious plan, but he expressed his pleasure with the innovative changes in the proposal. Connors reviewed the plan, which is available in its entirety on the middle school blog at http://marshallsimonds.wordpress.com.  The top-line goals were to improve the school’s capacity, provide clear direction for technology initiatives, improve communication and customer service, and to continue to improve …

Novel Cuisine for Marshall Simonds

Cafeteria eating area will be open in September 2011, but the kitchen will not be online until sometime in 2012.

On June 3 the Town of Burlington broke ground on a major addition and renovation of the Marshall Simonds Middle School.  The project is expected to be completed by September 2013 and includes a 33,000 square foot addition as well as a new cafeteria and kitchen. Currently, the middle school’s cafeteria is split into two large eating areas with the kitchen located between them.  This area is one of the first targeted for renovation “The current configuration is odd,” says architect Kevin Buckley, president of KBA Architects, Inc.  “The two eating areas create cliques, imbalance and separations." According to Buckley, the new cafeteria will be one large open space so students can all socialize and eat together. The kitchen will be located off…
