The Board of Selectmen voted to have a warrant for a request for 10 new liquor licenses for the January Town Meeting.
Burlington Town Meeting will take up a vote on whether the town should petition the state legislature for 10 additional liquor licenses during the January Town Meeting session. The warrant article was approved by the Burlington Board of Selectmen during the meeting Monday evening. The issue of a lack of licenses was first floated by the board in October. The basis of the move is that Town Administrator John Petrin told the board that there is interest among restaurant groups and the town's own planning department in acquiring new licenses for restaurants. The following is a letter to the editor: I have number of concerns regarding the proposal to petition the state for 10 new liquor licenses. Restaurants and bars along with hotels and hospitals are enormous generators of sewer effluent. Although the force main is soon to be completed that project will not create any additional sewer capacity. We are at the end of the sewer line and the communities downstream are just as busy as we are trying to build. How long will it be before we return to sewer surcharging as a regular event? The Board of Selectmen discuss looking into increasing the number of liquor licenses in town.
Should the Town of Burlington apply for more liquor licenses from the state to distribute to future restaurants? The Board of Selectmen discussed that issue during Monday night's meeting. Town Administrator John Petrin told the board that there is interest among restaurant groups and the town's own planning department in acquiring new licenses for restaurants. Burlington currently has 25 liquor licenses that can be used by restaurants, Petrin said. Due to town bylaws all of the establishments must be geared towards food. Burlington has no traditional bars.
