A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.
The end of the 2010-2011 winter athletics season is nearing and many of the Burlington High School teams are making late season pushes to qualify for the MIAA state tournament. A number of teams were in search of a post-season birth this past week so let’s take a look back at some results. Puck The boys’ and girls’ hockey teams both had busy weeks as the boys are within striking distance of a spot in the playoffs while the girls are trying to end their season on a positive note. The BHS boys’ team had a tough week, facing off against two Middlesex League opponents and going a disappointing 0-2. Saturday night the Red Devils were on the road for a rematch with Belmont High School, whom they routed on home ice earlier in the season. The …

A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.
Once again Mother Nature has done her best to put the Burlington High winter sports teams on ice with yet another bad snow storm this past week. The Red Devils took the postponements in stride as they have been all winter, though, and the teams that were able to get their games in competed hard. Let’s take a look back at some of the results. Wrestling The Burlington High School wrestling squad headed north on I-93 last weekend to compete at the Capital City Classic in Concord, New Hampshire. Despite an extremely competitive field of wrestlers from both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, a few Red Devils were able to succeed and finish near the tops of their respective weight classes. Luke Nigro wrestled strong and placed third for the 152-…

The team mounted an impressive third period comeback but it was not enough as they fell 4-2
Despite a late comeback attempt, the Burlington High School girls hockey team lost 4-2 to Reading on senior night at the Burlington Ice Palace. The Burlington seniors, along with their parent,s were honored in a nice ceremony before the game. Burlington had only two senior players, Ashley Brouillette and Alexandra Sorrentino, who were both captains along with team manager Pryianka Deb. Reading came out and showed Burlington they were not going to be very sentimental on their Middlesex League foe’s senior night by scoring just 1:10 seconds into the game. Krista Sorabella was the one who got the goal with an assist coming from Sarah Hart. Hart made a long pass to Sorabella to spring her on a breakaway. They caught Burlington in the midst of…

Captain Chris Irwin scored a third period goal but it was not enough to mount a comeback as the team lost 3-1
In a battle between two of the top hockey teams in the Middlesex League Reading topped Burlington 3-1 on Saturday night showing everyone why they are sitting atop the league standings with all the other teams looking up at them. The first period was a bit of a feeling out process for both teams, no one wanted to make a costly mistake and surrender a goal that in a tightly contested game could ultimately prove killer. As the period wore on both sides got more comfortable and started taking more chances trying to get the games first goal. With about a minute left Reading forward Tom Crowley got a long pass springing him on a breakaway. Burlington goalie Derek DeCastro decided to go the aggressive route, coming out of the goal diving at …

The Burlington High School boys varsity hockey team shut out Melrose 5-0 at the Ice Palace Wednesday night.
The Burlington Red Devil boys varsity hockey team is now officially red hot after their 5-0 win over Melrose on Wednesday night at the Burlington Ice Palace. After losing two games in a matter of a few days they have ripped off four straight wins, outscoring their opponents 20-4 in the process. Against Melrose no one was hotter than junior forward Trevor Cimino who notched four points in the victory. He got the scoring started just over three minutes into the game when he beat Melrose goalie Kevin Marshall with a backhand. The goal came after Brien Diffley forced a turnover in the offensive zone and gave the puck up to Cimino getting himself an assist for his effort. Just two minutes later captain Chris Irwin got in on the action when …
Despite a great effort, Burlington High School's girls varsity hockey team fell to Watertown 7-4 Saturday morning.
Despite being behind the bench of a now 2-10 team, Burlington High School girls varsity hockey head coach Kristen Thomas was extremely proud of her team’s effort in a 7-4 loss to Watertown on Saturday morning. “Tough one today,” she said. “When you look at the score sheet, we actually came out flying at the start of every period, and that’s not very typical for us, so that was nice to see. We did a nice job of putting the puck in the net when we had chances, so that’s also nice to see. What really hurt us today was the play of (Watertown’s) sniper Erika Kelly. She’s been dominating the whole league, not just us, so when she shot it usually went in, and that’s something we couldn’t really do anything about." The Red Devils came out …

Leah Olsen scores twice in final 10:23 to propel Lady Devils to win.
Though it came down to a single goal, the Burlington High School girls varsity hockey team held strong in a victory over Wilmington Wednesday night. The Lady Red Devils beat Wilmington 4-2 at Ristuccia Arena. “When we came back and scored a goal, it kind of took the win out of their sails,” said Burlington head coach Kristen Thomas of the game. “We generated some offense a little more naturally. I’d like to see us not keep chucking it to the front of the net though. We have to work on finishing.” If the game against Burlington is a sign of things to come, Wilmington girls hockey head coach Joe McMahon is happily looking forward to next season. Wilmington nearly tied the score in the final minutes in the third period against a team they …
