Force Water Main Project Gets Underway

First day of construction plagued with delays

Burlington’s new force water main project got underway this Monday, May 2. The project is ambitious and is expected to take 2 years to complete.  The first construction day was plagued with unexpected challenges as water mains were broken twice and nearby residents were left without water for several hours.  Neighbors report that crews worked until nearly midnight to repair the damage and water service was restored before the morning of Tuesday, May 03, 2011. Prior to the work on May 1st, the contractor installed air relief valves. These are permanent manholes that allow the Town to release trapped air from the system. Snow Cleanup Continues

The Burlington Highway Department is busy scraping secondary streets and getting the sidewalks safe for pedestrians and school children.

The Burlington Highway Department is still working on clearing away the snow from the massive storm that dumped nearly two-feet on the area Tuesday night and Wednesday. Department of Pubic Works Assistant Superintendent Al Ferreira said the most of the roads in town have been cleared and that the highway department is now focusing on pushing the snow further off the streets to widen the access for vehicles and is working to get the sidewalks cleared. "We're doing sidewalks as we speak and we're going around and still scraping down secondary roads," Ferreira said in an interview a little before noon today. Highway Department to Drivers: Be Safe in the Snow

Tips from the Highway Department in case of snow fall.

The winter weather everyone has been anticipating may be about to arrive. Reports are coming in that the first snow of the season may begin to fall over the next couple of days. If it does, the Burlington Highway Department is ready to hit the roads with plows and sand and would like to remind drivers to be careful if they must head out in adverse weather. "We are prepared and ready. The plows and are and the trucks are being loaded with sand," Highway Department Lead Foreman Jay Marchese said in an interview Friday afternoon. Marchese added that if the snow does begin to fall, people should try to avoid driving if possible.
