[Results updated at 9:35 a.m. on Nov. 7] Voters returned Watertown’s Marilyn Pettito Devaney to an eighth term on the Governor’s Council, Tuesday, supporting her by a wide margin in the race against Newton’s Thomas Sheff. With 95 percent of the 270 precincts counted, Pettito Devaney received nearly 74percent of the votes, according to results collected by Patch and Boston.com. Pettito Devaney, a former Watertown Town Councilor, received 230,222 votes, and Sheff, who had run for mayor in Newton in 2005, received 80,891 votes. Pettito Devaney defeated two challengers in the Democratic primary in September before facing Sheff, who ran as an un-enrolled candidate. The board that advises the governor on his or her appointments has been a source of embarrassment, the Boston Globe writes in an editorial, and the board has little function.
A few days after the primary selected the candidates who will face off for the Governor's Council, the Boston Globe ran an editorial calling for the end of the board that advises the governor on selections for judgeships, parole board and other posts. The council predates the United States, having been set up by King Charles I of England. The editorial suggests that the Governor's Council no longer serves a necessary purpose and has had a negative effect, "... thanks to a few councilors whose clownish antics have been an embarrassment to the state ..." Devaney got strong support in Watertown and Waltham to defeat Brookline's Harry Margolis.
Watertown's Marilyn Petitto Devaney won a narrow victory in the primary for the Third District of the Governor's Council Thursday with the help of voters in her hometown and Waltham. With all 270 precincts reporting in 32 communities, Devaney won with 17,469 votes (41.5 percent of the vote), ahead of Brookline's Harry Margolis' 14,526 and 10,069 for Charlie Shapiro of Newton, according to results reported to the Boston Globe by the Associated Press, and Waltham results gathered by Waltham Patch. "I always say, I don't own the seat, but I love the job," Devaney said.
