Shoveling for Safety: Clear Hydrants, Keep Venitillation Open

Burlington Fire Department Chief Steve Yetman is asking residents to clear snow away from fire hydrants to help protect the community.

There are roughly 700 hundred town-owned fire hydrants and 400 privately-owned hydrants spead around the town of Burlington. That is a lot of hydrants for the Burlington Fire Department and the Highway Department to dig out of the snow and so Fire Chief Steve Yetman is asking residents to lend a hand. "We have crews clearing snow away from the hydrants, but its a lot of work," Yetman said. "We are asking residents who are physically able to help us out and clear the snow away from hydrants in front of their property." Yetman said the problem of having hydrants buried under the snow was highlighted this morning in Bedford when crews responded to assist Bedford at a fire at 392 North Road that resulted in the death of the homeowner.
