Snow Expected At Week's End, Safety Tips for Driving in the Snow

Burlington could see more than 18 inches by Saturday afternoon. Storm to start before Friday commute.

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Burlington and surrounding areas from Friday night through Saturday morning. According to the watch, "The worst of the storm will be Friday night into Saturday morning," with snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour possible. "Travel may become nearly impossible with blowing and drifting snow." Several news outlets can agree that Winter Storm Nemo will bring a minimum accumulation of 18 inches to the area, but the maximum accumulation numbers vary. Surviving Snowmageddon 2011: Driving and Shoveling Tips

With the onset of another monster blizzard, Patch has put together a quick safety guide for dealing with two of the most difficult experiences during snowy conditions: driving and shoveling.

Those feathery flakes looked so majestic as they twinkled down to earth Tuesday night. However, on Wednesday afternoon, with sidewalks piled high with snow, walkways frozen solid, and cars buried under mountains of white, the inevitability of having to shovel our way out of this storm reared it's ugly head. Here are a few quick tips to help get your walkways clear and your car free from this onslaught from Jack Frost. The biggest problem that arises from shoveling is lower back pain and the risk of slipping on ice. To avoid this, try using snow melters or salt once the storm slows down. Let the salt work on the frozen stuff, making it easier to shovel overall. If the ice still isn't gone, it's a good idea to carry along a spade or another …
