Gomez, Markey Spar in First Senate Debate

Gun control, health care, economy, foreign policy among major topics in first meeting of candidates.

Gabriel Gomez and Edward Markey engaged Wednesday in their first debate before the U.S. Senate special election this month, and the tone was markedly similar to the tone of the overall campaign thus far. Gomez, the Republican Cohasset businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL, and Markey, the Democratic Malden congressman since his election in 1976, jabbed at each other during the hour-long debate at WBZ-TV's studios and sponsored by the news station and the Boston Globe. Topics for the evening included gun control, health care, the economy, foreign policy, recent national political scandals, immigration and abortion. Lynch, Markey Debate Health Care, Outside Funding

Candidates for U.S. Senate Democratic nomination squared off in Lowell Monday.

  U.S. Congressmen Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey met in their second debate Monday ahead of the Democratic U.S. Senate special primary in a contest that contained few fireworks outside of an exchange on health care. The debate, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and sponsored by the college and the Boston Herald, lasted about 45 minutes and touched a wide variety of issues on which the two Democrats mostly agreed. An early question was asked about the candidates' positions on the Affordable Care Act. Markey (D-Malden) voted in favor of the bill that passed in 2010 while Lynch (D-South Boston) was one of few Democrats who opposed it. Markey, Lynch Agree to Six Debates Before Primary

Locations include Boston, Lowell, New Bedford, Worcester and Springfield.

Congressmen Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch, the two Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate, have agreed to participate in six debates between now and the April 30 primary, according to the Boston Herald. The Boston Herald’s Chris Cassidy Tweeted that three of the debates will be general format, with the remaining three focusing on jobs, domestic issues and foreign policy. One of the debates will be held in Boston, and others will be held in Lowell, New Bedford, Worcester and Springfield. The location of the sixth debate has not been determined. Zenkin and Gordon Debate in 21st Middlesex District State Rep. Race

Kenneth Gordon and Walter Zenkin squared off on issues including economic development and the debt facing the MBTA in a debate on Oct. 17.

The two candidates for the 21st Middlesex District State Representative seat, Walter Zenkin, R-Burlington, and Kenneth Gordon, D-Bedford, met on Wednesday in a debate hosted by Burlington Cable Access Television that covered a range of issues. Gordon, Vice Chair of the Zoning Board in Bedford, and Zenkin, a Burlington Selectmen, are vying for the seat left vacant by retiring State Rep. Charles Murphy in the 21st Middlesex District which includes Bedford, Burlington and Precinct 3 in Wilmington.
