LIFE IN THE MOM LANE

Emergency Preparedness Critical For Families

Hurricane Sandy served as a reminder of the importance of having your family prepared for incoming storms.

From most of us moms, the first moment that we discovered we were expecting a baby was also the first moment that our number one priority in life changed. Suddenly, as if on cue, life becomes all about protecting our child. We are no longer our own number one priority and probably never will be again. Life becomes an effort to keep our children safe from harm under any circumstances. As Sandy barreled up the east coast this week and people all over New England prepared for the worst it got me thinking about how much information is too much for children to process. Yes, we want our kids to be prepared with a plan in case of disaster but, at what point, does preparing lead to scaring them half to death? Frankly, watching news coverage this…

DA: Burlington Stabbing Victim's Children Safe

The Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed that the children of the murder suspect and victim are safe.

The Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed to Patch this afternoon that both of Kristen Pulisciano's children are safe. This morning Fox 25 News in Boston reported that neighbors reported seeing the couple's two children run out of the home at the time when Pulisciano was being murdered. According to the report, the children were yelling that their mother had been stabbed. There is currently a manhunt under way for the father, Christopher Piantedosi, the lead suspect in last night's Forbes Avenue homicide. The DA's office would not say where the children are but said they were both safe. The DA also wouldn't verify the ages of the children, but from pictures and social media, it appears as if the son is of adult age and the …

Baby Steps

Bringing up Beach Baby

Packing lists and tips for family fun at the beach... It can be worth all the schlepping!

Some of my favorite childhood memories start with packing up the car and heading to the coast with family and friends.  Summer time meant jumping over waves, searching for sea shells, and poking around in tide pools.  My love for the beach has only grown into adulthood and I hope it will extend to my kids, so we can create many more memories in the sand and sea. We took our son to the beach last year (i.e. a million years ago) when he was just a squirmy little baby.  Now that he is a full-fledged toddler, the equipment is a little different but the considerations are the same: keeping him cool and shielded from the sun, entertained, and sustained. I remember fondly the days going to the beach with only a towel and a book in hand.  Now that…

To Love A Lovey

Forming attachments to a special toy is an important step of development.

My daughter’s been mobile for a few months now, even venturing into a run when she gets the proper motivation. And the more she ventures away from me, the more I’ve noticed she is reluctant to leave me behind.  Her new “independence” brings with it some fears, including the first inklings of separation anxiety. It’s all normal, it’s all part of growing up, and it’s something we’ll have to work through together. One of the best things to help toddlers learn independence is the “lovey” toy – a blanket, doll, or other stuffed animal that brings comfort and security to your child.  What’s The Deal with Lovey Toys? Between the ages of 1 and 2, lots of changes are happening for your little one. A constant symbol of comfort makes it easier to …

Loveys are lovely! My daughter still has hers and I still have mine. Both dolls have been through the wringer - and several "surgeries" - but they still bring a smile to us every time we look at them!   more ›

Big Girls Don't Nap

Conquering the great nap time debate with your toddler.

This week, my darling daughter decided that her two-naps-a-day routine needed a shakeup.  Specifically, she informed me with several temper tantrums that naps are optional in our house.  Since I didn’t get that memo, we’ve been debating the issue four days running now.  It’s doing wonders for my blood pressure, you know? Naps are important, though, and not just because mommy needs some quiet time.  According to an article in Parents magazine, toddlers are racing through development stages and sleep is necessary.  Most pediatricians recommend about 10-12 hours of sleep each night, with an extra 1-2 hours of naptime during the day.  Whether that’s one nap or two seems to depend on your toddler, but a nap is important all the same. Now, in no…

Celebrating Easter with Little Ones

If you have a baby or a toddler, Easter can't just be about chocolate bunnies and jelly beans.

For my daughter’s first Easter last year, she was only about six weeks old… so I’ll be honest, we didn’t really do much to celebrate with her.  She had her first Easter bib and we took some pictures with her stuffed bunny. That was about it. This year, though, she’s up and walking, curious about new discoveries, and actually able to keep up with her cousins.  We’ve got a family party to go to that day with a great big Easter egg hunt, the perfect little dress and shoes, and her very first personalized plush Peep bunny (yes, they make those. Visit redenvelope.com to get one for your little one).  But she can’t do everything that her older cousins can do, so in some ways we need to celebrate her second Easter with some creative ideas and …

This will be my daughter's second Easter, she'll be 2 in a couple of months and this year she's getting a basket of Crayola color wonder finger paint and paper and markers (all non-toxic) and crayola my first crayons which are washable, and some DVD's of the shows she likes on Nick Jr (we don't have cable), and we will be having a pancake brunch and hiding (putting in plain sight) some plastic …   more ›
