Rally Against Cancer - Burlington Relay for Life Kick-Off Event

Preparations for the the American Cancer Society's Burlington Relay for Life are starting with a kick-off party and everyone is invited to attend.

Cancer directly affects millions of Americans a year and indirectly affects us all. A local group, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, is inviting the community to join them in taking a stand against this disease. According to a release from the Relay For Life Burlington Committee, preparations for this year's Relay for Life are underway. Fundraising Dance Friday for Local Man Battling Cancer

Friends and family of Bob Jankowski, who is battling cancer, are holding a fundraiser at the Woburn Sons of Italy this Friday.

The following is a guest article: The friends and family of Bob Jankowski are holding a fundraising event on Friday Jan. 4 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Sons of Italy in Woburn to raise money to support Bob's ongoing fight against cancer. Bob was diagnosed with colon cancer in June, 2009. He underwent surgery to have the cancer removed, but in August the doctors found that it had spread to his liver. In October of the same year, he had 60% of his liver removed. In March of 2010, he was given a clean bill of health and he was able to return back to work. By the fall of 2010, the cancer had spread to his lungs and his liver; he was told he would be on chemo therapy for the rest of his life. Bob has been a Master Mason for 27 years at Simonds …

Fundraiser for Burlington Dad Battling Cancer

There will be a spaghetti dinner tomorrow at the American Legion for Kyle Gendron.

The following is a guest story by Wendy Gendron When Mary Elizabeth Gendron was born in November 2004, her parents already knew she was born with an extra chromosome. That chromosome was earmarked early in Kerry Gendron’s pregnancy after a Level 2 ultrasound revealed that their 20 week-old daughter had markers indicating Down syndrome. After receiving the news, Kyle and Kerry Gendron spoke at length with their OB/GYN, who suggested the couple undergo amniocentesis to confirm the ultrasound results.  They did, and their unborn daughter was in fact, diagnosed with Down syndrome. Upon receiving the confirmation, Kyle felt ‘it wasn’t a big deal.’  He had had previous experience with individuals with Down syndrome in both his youth and his …

Burlington Company Wins Biologic Drug Patent for Cancer

Coronado Biosciences announced this week they have obtained a key patent for new cancer treatment.

Coronado Biosciences is at it again. Last week we carried a story of the bio-tech company researching the use of parasites found in pig feces to treat autoimmune conditions such as Chrohn's Disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Now this week the Boston Herald reported that the company has been awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent Trademark Office for a biologic that can activate a body's immune system's natural killer cells to fight cancer. According to the story, early studies of this treatment have shown activity in myeloma, breast cancer, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. Click here for the full story.

The 2012 Burlington Relay for Life has raised $143,000 with more donations still coming in.

Can rain keep warriors again cancer home for the weekend? Absolutely not. Varsity Field at Burlington High School was alive with activity this weekend as members of the Burlington community came together despite the rain to raise money to fight cancer. The rain started early Saturday morning, but it wasn’t enough to keep away the many die-hard teams that participated in Saturday’s Relay For Life. There were 62 teams set up and ready do go at Opening Ceremonies. The evening started with a few speeches, the BurlingtonHigh School chorus sang the National Anthem, and then survivors, caregivers and teams took the track to walk from 6 pm until 6 am. Town Hall Employees Support 3-Year-Old with Rare Cancer

Employees come out to help raise money for cancer research.

The following is a note from Town Clerk Amy Warfield: Employees at Town Hall gathered together last week to show their support of childhood cancer awareness. The shirts were part of the fund raising activity to support that charity and honor Eve, the granddaughter of one of the staff members. Eve is 3 years old and has been diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. She is current undergoing chemotherapy as part of her treatment. There will be a 5K Charity Walk on June 18th. We will present more information shortly.

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Burlington is two weeks away.

The following is a release from the Burlington Relay for Life: Teams have been hard at work raising money for the upcoming American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Burlington. Relay will take place on June 2-3 at theBurlington High School track. Members of each team will take their place, take turns and walk the track from 6 pm until 6 am as the idea behind Relay For Life is that “cancer never sleeps”. Teen LIGHT and Flatbread Unite to Help Teens

Pizza Party at Flatbread from 5:30 to 9 p.m. tomorrow night.

The following is a release from MSMS's student group Teen LIGHT: Hundreds of 8th graders from the Marshall Simonds Middle School have made it their mission to help teens with serious illnesses such as cancer.  The students of Teen LIGHT will host a charity night at Flatbread restaurant on Tuesday, May 15.  Proceeds will benefit Camp Sunshine, Christopher’s Haven, and Dana-Farber Jimmy Fund. The “pizza party” will be from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Flatbread restaurant.  The restaurant is on 213 Burlington Road in Bedford across from Mitre field.  Flatbread will donate $1.75 for each small pizza sold and $3.50 for each large pizza.  Pizza sales include dine-in, take-out, and a new drive-up option.  The evening will include a 50 – 50 raffle, T…

Reminder: Relay for Life Kick-Off Celebration Tonight

The Burlington Relay for Life is hosting a kick-off celebration at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the Clubhouse at the Burlington Marriott.

Take a stand against cancer by getting involved in the Burlington Relay for Life, kicking off with a special celebration tonight. The disease directly affects millions of Americans a year and indirectly affects us all. Once again local fighters of cancer, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, is inviting the community to join them in an overnight relay to raise funds to find a cure and support those afflicted by cancer.
