Superintendent: Schools Keeping Things as Routine as Possible

Dr. Eric Conti told Patch that the Burlington schools do have people available for the students if they need to talk but the plan is to keep the routine in the aftermath of the marathon bombings.

Students returned to school Monday after an April vacation that was filled with news of local tragedy with the Boston Marathon bombings. Patch reached out to schools administration to ask what the schools are prepared to do to help any child affected by the tragedy or the news of the tragedy. Superintendent Eric Conti said that unless a student raises the issue or says they are having difficulties, the plan is to keep things as normal as possible for the students. "The plan is to keep everything as routine as possible," he said. "Kids thrive in routine so we are trying to keep everything normal." Conti said the schools always have people available to speak with any student having difficulties. "We always have people for the kids to talk to…

I just saw a kid slip and fall as he walked on in the street (Terrace Hall) to get to his bus. If the sidewalks aren't cleared, school should be closed. It's not safe.   more ›

Tell Us: Should Burlington Close Schools Tomorrow?

As of 5:45 p.m. there has not been any word on school closings for Monday, but parents on Burlington Patch's Facebook page suggest they should close.

Should Burlington close school tomorrow? As of the posting of this article there has been no word from the Burlington School Department on whether there will be classes on Monday. The main roads are cleared and many of the secondary roads are reportedly mostly clear, though there are also reports that some areas of town still have some roads in need of a plow. The other concern is that the many sidewalks and bus stops have not been cleared, which could post dangers to students walking to school or waiting for the bus. As one reader posted to the Burlington Patch Facebook page: "Roads are good but sidewalks are not cleared. Hate to see kids walking to bus stops in the middle of Bedford and FW Roads in the morning ...hope they call off …

Our biggest issue with school open today was no sidewalks, our stop is up the street so we drove to school this morning but i had to get out of work early to pick up my son at the stop or he would have had to walk home in the street.   more ›

How are our kids ever going to compete in a global economy with math and science scores like these? is it that we have the wrong teachers, teaching the wrong things, led by the wrong administrative personnell, and supported by parents who aren't making the investment in time that's required? This may seem harsh, but something needs to change. I'm not trying to lay blame either, but rather to …   more ›
