Does the lovable children's holiday classic send the wrong message? Tell us your thoughts.
In October, Patch asked readers how they felt about one parent's view that "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" condoned bullying. Specifically, blogger DadCamp wrote that the show sends the wrong message to children because of its "continuous teasing and bullying" It's not the first time a parent has spoken out against a classic children's program with such a claim. Last December, news spread that author and special ed professor George Giuliani said that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was also a program laden with the theme of bullying, considering how much Rudolph was an outsider due to his glowing red nose. Though one blogger thinks Charlie Brown movies send the wrong message, Patch's mom columnist disagrees.
Last week while watching the news I saw a story featuring a blogger who believed that Charlie Brown specials, starting with, but not limited to, “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” should be retired from television. His opinion centered on the fact that the name calling and teasing throughout the Charlie Brown specials was nothing more than bullying and that, “Charlie Brown is supposed to be the hero, instead he is kicked and demeaned at every turn, even by the adults giving out candy.” In addition the blog goes on to criticize Snoopy’s World War II “flying ace alter ago” as being inappropriate for young children. One parent is asking the holiday classic special to be removed from the airwaves because of a "bullying" theme. Do you agree?
Teasing or bullying? One parent is speaking out online against the Halloween classic program, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," claiming the animated favorite actually condones bullying, according to a report on WCVB.com. The TODAY Show's Moms Blog reported this week that in a recent blog post on Babble.com, blogger DadCamp wrote that the show sends the wrong message to children because of its "continuous teasing and bullying": "The show is riddled with the kids calling each other stupid, dumb, and blockheads," DadCamp wrote. Charlie Brown is great for kids! Not showing any form of bullying in any media will not magically make it cease to exist, in fact, it will probably make bullied kids feel more alienated from their peers. Conversations about what happened when instances of sexism, bullying, violence, etc should happen! You can't just let the television parent your children for you!
