In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here's a list of local breast cancer support groups.
One in 8 American women and 1 in 1,000 American men will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups. Lahey Clinic hosts a Breast Cancer support group on the first Wednesday of every month starting at 6 p.m. in the Cancer Center, 3W Conference Room. Frank Gainley, of Burlington, will be running in the 12th Annual B.A.A. Half Marathon to help raise funds for breast cancer research.
The following is a release from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute: On October 7, Frank Gainley of Burlington, will be running in the 12th annual B.A.A. Half Marathon presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, as a member of the official Dana-Farber team. Each of the nearly 500 Dana-Farber team members are committed to raising at least $500 to support adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber. Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund have partnered with the B.A.A. in the half marathon for ten years. Last week the members of the Burlington Fire Department wore pink shirts to raise awareness of breast cancer and cancer research.
Firefighters often don some cool equipment and clothing while responding to emergencies and saving lives. Last week residents may have seen members of the Burlington Fire Department and Burlington Firefighters Local 2313 sporting a different type of uniform, though the goal of saving lives was the same. They were all wearing pink T-shirts to raise awareness about breast cancer. "The whole department has been affected in one way or another with this disease and we wanted to show support and raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month," said Todd Ficociello.
