Shaw's to be Sold in $3.3 Billion - How Will this Affect Our Local Grocery Stores?

No immediate changes planned, but store leases could eventually be sold, analysts say.

The new owners of local Star Market and Shaw's supermarkets say no immediate changes are planned for the stores. There is a Shaw's on the corner of Cambridge Street and Winn Street in Burlington.  According to the Boston Globe, there are 155 Shaw's and 14 Star Markets with 17,000 employees. In November the troubled company had announced cutting 700 jobs. The new owners, an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management, bought the stores as part of a bigger $3.3 billion deal. Cerberus also controls the locally based Steward Health Care System network of community hospitals.  The Boston Herald says Albertson's will take over all the New England Shaw's and Star Markets. Albertson's is located in Florida, also. In by gone years, Star Market was always my favorite. Roche Bros. is my choice now; clean, atmosphere friendly and well stocked. When a grocery store becomes so large that it's like walking a marathon to shop, it's off my list. : )   more ›

Sound Off: Should Massachusetts Get Rid of the Governor's Council?

The board that advises the governor on his or her appointments has been a source of embarrassment, the Boston Globe writes in an editorial, and the board has little function.

A few days after the primary selected the candidates who will face off for the Governor's Council, the Boston Globe ran an editorial calling for the end of the board that advises the governor on selections for judgeships, parole board and other posts. The council predates the United States, having been set up by King Charles I of England. The editorial suggests that the Governor's Council no longer serves a necessary purpose and has had a negative effect, "... thanks to a few councilors whose clownish antics have been an embarrassment to the state ..." This is why we DON'T elect judges. Often, judges make what at the time seem like outrageous decisions but they advance us as a culture, such as ending segregation. The Reagan appointed judge that approved it--well, I disagree because no one on the outside can demand this surgery. Lahey One of Three ERs Cited for Denial of Care

The Boston Globe reports that three Massachusetts hospitals have been cited in the past six months for turning patients away from the emergency room.

The Boston Globe reported today that state health officials have cited three Massachusetts hospitals for sending patients away from their emergency rooms and that the actions might include fines for the medical facilities. According to the Globe report, Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester and Lahey Clinic in Burlington have all been cited in the last six months.In the Chartlon incident, caregivers failed to provide needed treatment before transporting the patient who died while en route to another facility. According to the Globe, in the Lahey Clinic incident, a patient who arrived at the hospital in Peabody on Nov. 19, 2011 was told that he was banned fro the emergency room there and the ER at the …

Burlington Bus Driver in Court for Accusation of False Reprt

Nancy Parker of Burlington will appear in court on charges of compensation fraud, misleading an investigator, and filing a false report.

A Burlington woman and former MBTA bus driver appeared in court last week to face charges of making a false accusation in relation to a 2007 incident.  According to the Boston Globe, Nancy Parker, 53, of Burlington, was arraigned for allegedly fraudulently collected more than $7,750 in workers compensation after claiming she was shot while on the job in 2007. "Parker is charged with worker's compensation fraud, misleading an investigator, and filing a false report. A clerk magistrate ordered her released without bail, and to return for a pretrial hearing Feb. 28," the Globe reported. According to the Globe report, Parker allegedly told police she was shot by a man while conducting her shop into Chelsea. Later, she allegedly changed her …
