Burlington's Hammond Promoted by Gen. Petraeus

Col. John A. Hammond, a Burlington resident, was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General Thursday in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Col. John A. Hammond, a Burlington resident serving in Afghanistan, was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General by Gen. David H. Petraeus in a pinning ceremony Thursday outside the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Headquarters in Kabul. With the honor, Hammond becomes the first Massachusetts National Guard officer to be promoted to the rank of general officer in a theater of combat since World War II, according to a release from the Army. “There are some promotions for a commissioned officer that mean more than others,” said Petraeus, commander of the ISAF and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, “and being promoted from a Colonel to a flag officer is one of them.” With Petraeus readying to leave Afghanistan to become the director of …
