"History" of a Winning Float

The Burlington Historical Society took first place in the Fourth of July float contest.

The following is a letter from Burlington's Historical Society president Mary Nohelty on the society's float winning 1st Place in the 4th of July Parade float contest. She also sent pictures of the float before the parade and in the parade (see above): Hi Everyone, if you haven’t heard the good news, we took first place in the Fourth of July float contest. Now we have two trophies, one for the West School float and one for our farming heritage. I wonder what will be next?   We all woke to heavy rain, but happily before the parade was underway, the sun shone.   The sun shone on some of the finest people I know — all the members of the Historical Society who worked so hard to make this a success.  Where do I start?  Dotty Bennett made the …

Images: Burlington Pups Center Stage at Dog Show

Images from the Burlington 4th of July dog competition on the Commons.

One of the big attractions in last week's Fourth of July celebration put on by the Burlington Breakfast Rotary Club featured residents' four-legged friends. The annual dog competition brought about a dozen entrants. Categories included best dressed, best mutt, best trick and the dog/owner pair that looked the most alike. Check out our pictures of the dogs above. Did you take your own pictures? We have some here but would love more! If you have pictures from the show please add them to this article by clicking the "Upload Photos and Videos" button above.

Image Gallery: Burlington Celebrates Freedom on 4th of July

Burlington celebrated Independence Day with a great parade and fun events on the Town Commons.

Morning showers weren't enough to keep Burlington residents from coming out to celebrate freedom during the town's Fourth of July Celebration. The day's events were organized by the Burlington Breakfast Rotary Club and featured a morning parade followed by fun activities on the Town Commons. The featured unit was the world championship "Stuart Highlanders Pipe Band" which placed first in international competition earlier this year in Switzerland.  A new attraction will be "The Mad Bavarian Band" from Lebanon, NH. They ever-popular "Hurdy Gurdy Man" Jim Bryant came down all the way from Wayne, Maine. The fun on the Commons included free pony rides, bouncy houses, and a 4-car train to ride as well as the ever-popular competitive Dog Show. …

Five Things You Need to Know Today: 4th of July Version

Some facts and figures you may not have known about the Fourth of July.

In May 1776, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June, admitting that their efforts were hopeless; a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress. Although John Adams and Benjamin Franklin helped Thomas Jefferson with the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson is the actual author. Massachusetts was the first state to make the Fourth of July an official holiday. 2.5 million: Number of …

4th Of July: What Will the Weather Be Like?

We can expect some morning showers and possible thunderstorms.

Tomorrow is Independence Day and Burlington has a parade set to begin at 10:30 a.m. with fun events to follow on the Town Commons. So how is Mother Nature going to behave tomorrow? What kind of weather can we expect?  According to the National Weather Service we can expect a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, mainly after 7 a.m. However, the chance of precipitation is only about 40 percent and new rainfall amounts are expected, at most, to be less than a tenth of an inch. If thunderstorms do happen, we could get some more rain however. Otherwise the day will be partly sunny with a high temperature near 82 degrees. Tomorrow night we can expect a 30-percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11 p.m. Otherwise…

Recipe of the Week: Fourth of July Rice Krispie Treats

These easy to make red, white and blue treats are great for little chefs to help with.

"If our country is worth dying for in time of war let us resolve that it is truly worth living for in time of peace."  ~Hamilton Fish My boy is always asking to help me in the kitchen. Since it is typically a mad scramble to get dinner on the table after work and activities, our cooking together time is reserved for the weekends. I was looking for something to make to bring to a party on the Fourth of July and stumbled upon a really fun photo and recipe on www.lilluna.com. I knew it would be the perfect treat for us to make together. Kids (and lots of us older folks) love Rice Krispie Treats and by just adding a little food coloring you can tailor them to suit most any holiday. Since Independence Day is just around the corner, this red, …

Hi Julia, Thanks for the comment. We did have Wilmington listed in an earlier version of this story (I took out previous days yesterday) but I think they had more than one show because we listed for earlier in the week. We'll try and make sure we have all of the different shows next year. Still, hope this article helps you find some good area shows!   more ›
