Aly Raisman named a Bostonian of the Year

Along with Kayla Harrison, two Mass. Olympians are named this year's Boston.com Bostonians of the Year. Aly's mom also had her 15 Minutes of Fame, according to Time.

Aly Raisman is among the most famous Needham residents, and is getting a shout-out from Boston.com as well. The Gold-medal winning Olympic gymnast tranied at the Brestyan’s American Gymnastics Club in Burlington. Their year in review piece from earlier today names her and fellow Olympian Kayla Harrison as Bostonians of the Year, along with a review of her performance at the TD Garden earlier in the year.  From the piece, "The crowd of 16,000 bathes Gabby Douglas and the other golden girls in warm cheer, but saves their screams for the 18-year-old pride of Needham."  Picking up a gold medal in Gymnastics, the team captain was given a welcome home worthy of an Olympian after the London 2012 Olympics, complete with parade and an Aly Rally.  …

Olympian Aly Raisman Injured at California Show

The Olympic gymnast from Needham reportedly fell from the uneven bars during a weekend performance.

Needham Olympian Aly Raisman and teammate McKayla Maroney were injured after they fell from the uneven bars while performing in the Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions in California over the weekend, WCVB reports. Raisman fell onto her stomach during her routine on the uneven bars, according to WCVB, but was able to walk out of the arena. But Maroney, who reportedly fell while she was trying to land a dismount during her uneven bars routine, had to be carried from the room by medics. Neither of the two gymnasts were featured in the show's finale, according to WCVB. The WCVB report also stated that a source had confirmed that Raisman was OK and was in San Diego. Aly Raisman acts as if she was always prepared. Not for the gymnastics routines for which she earned two gold medals - one team, one individual - but for the throng of media, sponsorship opportunities and the world’s spotlight following her winning performances in London. The captain of the U.S. gold-medal winning gymnastics team took some time to talk to Burlington Patch at the public announcement of her relationship with Poland Spring Tuesday morning at Needham Town Hall. Patch Poll: Should Olympians Be Taxed for Winning?

Do you think Olympic champions should be taxed on their medals and prize earnings?

The Olympics are a celebration of athleticism and pride for your country. But when those Olympians return home to the U.S. with their medals, they can expect a little more than a congratulations from the IRS. According to the Huffington Post, Olympians' medals and prize money are both subject to income tax. A gold medal, which is worth $650, according to CNN, could cost athletes about $236 in taxes. While a bronze metal, which is worth $5, could only cost an athlete $2 in taxes In addition, the U.S. Olympic Organizing Committee will award London champions $25,000 for a gold medal, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bringing home a bronze, Reuters reports.
