Pandolfo, Bruins a Part of Memorable Night at TD Garden

On Wednesday night, Boston Bruins and their fans helped begin the healing process in the wake of Monday's Boston Marathon bombings as they showed support for victims.

The Boston Bruins were a part of a moving and memorable tribute to the victims of Monday's Boston Marathon bombings prior to the start of Wednesday's game. Among the black and gold who felt compelled to help the city begin to heal was Jay Pandolfo, a Burlington High School graduate. Prior to the start of the contest at TD Garden, the Bruins played a video tribute and projected "Boston Strong" ribbons onto the ice surface as the lights in the building remained dark. When Rene Rancourt, famous for his regular renditions of the National Anthem, took to the microphone, he sang the opening notes of the song. But soon after, Rancourt stopped singing, and allowed the crowd to take over, providing a moment that will last a lifetime for sports fans…

Tragedy Mars First Boston Marathon

Patch editor gives a first-hand report from the Boston Marathon.

Monday, April 15 was my first time running the Boston Marathon. It was supposed to be a fun day focused on overcoming a strenuous 26.2-mile race, but once I reached the end, I was greeted with panic, caution and tears rather than high fives and celebrations. Monday was a perfect day for a runner and spectator, it was sunny and warm with a cool breeze. It would be hard to find an excuse why anyone with the day off from work wouldn’t be in town to either watch the race, the Sox game or to grab a bite at a restaurant. I was running this marathon as a bandit. I had no official number and was nervous security or someone from the Boston Athletic Association would kick me out. Once I reached the start line, it was smooth sailing. I was full of …

Quite the Week for Aly Raisman

From a stunning DWTS dance to #NextAdele.

It was the powerful contemporary dance with dancing partner Mark Ballas that started the week for Needham native Aly Raisman. [See video of the dance and the Dancing with the Stars judges' responses at right.]  By mid-week, the Olympic gold-medaling gymnast told the Boston Herald she "was hurting this week." Raisman explained more in Parade magazine, where she just launched a blog: Mark and I had a good time, but we were both really sore because we worked so hard during practice. It was a lot of lifts, which is something I’ve never done before. Being a gymnast, I’m used to being out there on the floor by myself, so being lifted by another person definitely works different muscles than I’m used to. Not too surprising, when you see the …

Wilmington Pushes Past BHS Lax in Second Half

Though Burlington High School held a 6-4 edge at the intermission, Wilmington used a man-up situation to take control of the game and win, 13-9.

The Burlington High School boys lacrosse team led early, but host Wilmington took control early in the second half to improve to 4-0 on the season on Tuesday afternoon. J.P. Scola notched a first half hat trick, Ryan McNeill added two goals in the first half and Billy Puirier also found the back of the net in the opening two periods to give the Red Devils a 6-4 edge at halftime. But a Burlington stick violation gave the Wildcats a locked in man up situation to open the third quarter, and Wilmington took advantage with four goals in the opening two minutes to take control as they went on to a 13-9 victory.

The Needham Olympian made it through the first round of voting of the ABC dancing reality show.

After last night's solid performance on "Dancing With the Stars," Needham native Aly Raisman and partner Mark Ballas are continuing their run into next week.  Raisman trained for the Olympics Gymnastics Team at the Brestyan’s American Gymnastics Club in Burlington. She won two gold medals and a bronze medal for the U.S. Women’s Olympics at the 2012 London Games.
