'Fill The Bus' Food Drive at Burlington Truck Day a Big Success

Many participants in Burlington's Truck Day this past Sunday brought food donations for those in need.

Hundreds of people came out to the Burlington Town Commons this past Sunday to take part in , and while there many also made a food or financial donation to help People Helping People and the Burlington Food Pantry.

People Helping People teamed up with A & F Bus Company, which had a school bus on the commons where people could drop off non-perishable food items or make a monetary donation to help those in need.

Near the end of the day one whole side of the bus was filled with grocery bags and the money jar was filled with donations. According to April Healey of A & F Bus Company, donations came in strong all day. There was also a second bus at the Burlington which she said was also being filled with donations.

The following is a letter of thanks from Janet Sullivan of People Helping People:

The Board of Directors of People Helping People would like to take this opportunity to thank Burlington resident April Healey for organizing “” that was held on Sunday, Sept. 9 during Truck Day at the Burlington Town Common.  April approached People Helping People about 6 months ago and wanted to do an event for the Food Pantry utilizing the buses.  She eventually came up with the idea to do it on Truck Day.

Thanks to April’s efforts close to 100 bags of food filled the 2 buses that were generously donated by Robert Bent, Owner of A & F Bus Company.  In addition there was over $400 in cash donations.

We would also like to thank Al Fay for allowing People Helping People participate in Truck Day an event where we were able to reach out to so many different people.

A thank you to all April’s helpers Dottie Yeadon – who let us use “her bus”, Sandy Cannon, Wendy Peterson, Lisa Jackson, Michelle Flaherty, Maria Lombardo, Alicia Moran, Michelle Papagno, and Lydia Brown.

Also thank you to Burlington Bikram Yoga on Terry Avenue who collected food by allowing people to take a class for free on Labor Day if they brought a food donation.

Thank you to Wayne Bryant, Manager of Shaws Supermarket in Burlington.  Wayne had his baggers but “Fill the Bus Flyers” into grocery orders for the past two weeks and graciously allowed for a bus for donations to be placed at Shaws in addition to the town common.

The Town of Burlington is lucky to have people in our community such as April who make a difference.  We thank all those who contributed to People Helping People on Sunday and throughout the year.  We look forward to a Second Annual ‘Fill the Bus Day” next year!
