Patch Snap: Marshall Simonds' New Basketball Team

Patch Snap is an occasional post that features pictures from around Burlington or Burlington residents out and about.

Welcome to another edition of Patch Snap, where we highlight a picture or pictures of around Burlington or of Burlington residents out and about.

Today's Patch Snap picture comes from Kim Münch, who wrote:

This is the first year that the Marshall Simonds Middle School has its very own basketball team - named "BOOM" it is comprised of 6,7 and 8th graders.

Burlington BOOM is coached by Mark Melanson. The boys hold practices three times a week and compete into two different leagues, often playing four games each week, so its a big commitment for these athletes. To date [Editor note: at leasy as of Feb. 4], they are undefeated in the Middle School league and have an outstanding record in their travel league of 29-4.

Check out a picture of the team above.

Wow, it's about time that the Middle School has SOMETHING to offer as an extracurricular activity. That school has hidden behind "activity block" for too many years. Survey middle schools in the surrounding communities and you'll find they have musical productions and athletics galor. MSMS for my college-age kids locked the doors at 2 and wouldn't let them back in even if they forgot their homework. It's about time! Cheers to the new basketball team! Let's see more of it coming from Marshall Simonds!

Kudos to Mark for starting this program, it is long overdue. Maybe someone could do the same for the girls. Most other communities have a middle school sports program that is missing in Burlington. We rely upon the Baseball/Softaball, Pop Warner, Soccer, Hockey and other independent programs to carry the load, which often can be a lot more expensive.
