Burlington Town Meeting voted to accept a zoning map amendment that will likely allow a new Mercedes Benz dealership to come to town.

The project still needs to work through a Planning Board process before final approval.

As reported on Burlington Patch, the Collection Auto Group [CAG], based in Ohio, is looking to build the dealership on the 5.5-acre property at 80-82 Cambridge Street. CAG currently owns 22 dealerships in the Midwest and this would be the group's first in the area.

In order to move forward, CAG needed approval from Town Meeting to amend the zoning map and amend the Planned Development District known as the "Burlington Corporate Center."

Town Meeting did approve the changes Monday night following a presentation by CAG founder and president Bernie Moreno.

Moreno gave a presentation addressing concerns he's heard about the project. These include lighting, car carriers on Cambridge Street and the design of the building meshing with the style of that part of town.

Moreno addressed these issues in an interview with Burlington Patch that can be found here

There were some concerns raised by Town Meeting members, including whether Moreno would be held to building a dealership on the site, how they can be sure no carriers would ever stop on Cambridge Street and if this was the best use for the site.

There was also a concern raised by one member that the process for the zoning change was not done properly because some information was only provided by the planning board earlier that night. However on advice from Town Counsel the article was taken up for a vote.
