Letter to the Editor: State Sen. Donnelly Looks Back on the Past Year

An open letter from Massachusetts State Sen. Kenneth Donnelly.

Dear Friends,

As the end of the year approaches, and we prepare to begin the second half of our legislative session in January, I wanted to take the time to update you on what the Senate has accomplished in this past year.

This year has been very busy and productive in the Legislature with some major pieces of legislation being passed.  Two bills of particular importance that I was most proud to support were An Act Relating to Anti-Human Trafficking and Protection as well as An Act Relative to Transgender Equal Rights.

We also increased local aide in the supplemental budget passed in the fall and maintained the unemployment rate freeze, helping both our municipalities and small businesses. We also passed legislation that ensured those having difficulty finding jobs in this tough economy were able to remain eligible for federal extended unemployment benefits.

I filed the Middle Skills Solutions Act which is aimed at closing the skills gap of workers in Massachusetts.  This bill sets up a framework to better use the resources and expertise of our community colleges and employers to provide the skilled workers our industries need. I will continue to work actively and passionately for the passage of the Middle Skills Solutions Act, and bring awareness to the issue of the skills gap and how our colleges, employers, and government can address this issue.

At this time of year, we pay special attention to those in need. I encourage you to reach out to your community and do what you can to help.  And thank you for all you do throughout the year. I know I am continually impressed by the generosity of my constituents.

Most importantly I want to tell you all how honored I am to serve as your Senator for the 4th Middlesex District. I look forward to continue working with you, and as always, I greatly appreciate your feedback, questions, and support.

Best regards and a very happy and healthy New Year to you and yours!

Ken Donnelly
