How Did Burlington Vote in the Massachusetts Primary?

A look at how Burlington voters decided to cast their votes yesterday.

Burlington residents, like all of Massachusetts, went to the polls to vote for their chosen party's representative yesterday in the state primary.

A total of 1,908 Burlington voters went to the polls. That represents 13.3 percent of the total eligible voters.

In Burlington 60.6 percent (1,158) of the voters cast votes in the Democratic races, 39.35 percent (752) cast votes for Republicans and 0.05 percent cast votes for the Green-Rainbow party.

In the national senate election Burlington voters cast 843 votes for Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren and 710 for incumbent Scott Brown. In the congressional race voters went with incumbent John Tierney with 812 votes versus 622 for Republican Richard Tisei.

In the Massachusetts State Senate race for the 4th Middlesex District, Burlington residents cast 864 votes for State Sen. Kenneth Donnelly and 533 for Republican Gerry Dembrowski.

In the main contested race the would affect Burlington, the race for the 21st Middlesex District State Representative Seat being left vacant by retiring Rep. Charles Murphy, the votes favored candidate Dave Fionda.

The unique aspect of this race was that Murphy, who announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election, was the only name on the ballot. This meant that the three Democratic challengers, CPA and business owner , Vice Chair of the Bedford Zoning Board and attorney and former Burlington Selectman and current Town Meeting member , had to run write-in/sticker campaigns.

In order for a candidate in the race to be on the Nov. 6 ballot in the general election, he or she would have to beat Murphy in total votes in Burlington, Bedford and Precinct 3 of Wilmington.

In Burlington Fionda garnered 454 votes, Gordon received 257 and Mooney received 41. .

On the Republican side there was also a write-in campaign by . Zenkin needed to garner at least 150 votes to be on the Nov. 6 ballot and he did so handily in Burlington alone with 458 votes.
