Burlington Man Sentenced for 2009 Fraud Case

A Burlington man is facing parole, community service and a requirement to pay restitution after being found guilty of a 2009 fraud case.

On July 23 Anthony J. Scalzilli, 40, of Burlington pleaded guilty to filing a false crime report, filing a false motor-vehicle insurance claim and removing a motor vehicle to defraud, according to a story in the Lowell Sun

He was sentenced to a two year probation term and 200 hours of community service as part of a plea deal. Scalzilli also has to pay $22,420 in restitution to Hanover Insurance.

The fraud occurred in 2009 when Scalzilli and his wife Vicki Scalzilli reported their 2008 Infinity QX56 SUV was stolen from a Home Depot parking lot in Tewksbury. The car was found in a nearby river, in neutral, with a window rolled down. The couple also said that an $8,000 watch and a car seat worth a couple of hundred dollars were in the vehicle when it was stolen.

However, because the SUV's security system was such that a key or tow truck would be required to steal the vehicle, the The Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts was called to investigate. Investigator's checked the surveillance tape and did not see a tow truck or the Infinity parked in the lot at all.

According to the story, Hanover Insurance did not approve the stolen car claim but the couple did receive over $6,000 in insurance on the watch. The restitution to Hanover Insurance is to cover the cost of the investigation.
