Safe Routes to School: “Stepping Out to Summer”

The school year may be over, but walking and bicycling to school initiatives are still going strong.

MassDOT’s Safe Routes to School program is educating elementary and middle school aged children on the importance of walking and biking to school through our Stepping Out to Summer Program. Through a variety of fun and interactive activities, the program engages and educates school-aged children on the health and environmental benefits of walking and bicycling as transportation options and reviews important pedestrian and bicycle safety skills.

MassDOT’s Safe Routes to School Outreach Coordinators are working with communities, and partner schools throughout the Commonwealth to conduct more than 40 sessions in 16 communities. Sessions are expected to engage more than 1,000 students throughout the summer, in communities that include Palmer, Fall River, Lawrence and Framingham among others.
