Burlington Players Honored at State House

The Burlington Players community theater group was honored yesterday at the State House, as guests of State Representative Ken Gordon. The group, which last month won Best Production in the Nation from the American Association of Community Theaters, was recognized for its achievements on the House floor and at a post-evening lunch.

“It was an honor to visit with the Burlington Players at the State House following their success at the American Association of Community Theater National Festival,” said House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo. “I commend the Players for receiving the Best Production award and thank each for their dedication to enriching the lives of Massachusetts residents through the performing arts. The House has been a strong supporter of the arts and it’s very rewarding to see our investment in the cultural community pay off.”

After meeting with the Speaker, Rep. Gordon, along with Senator Ken Donnelly and other legislators, presented the group with a Resolution signed by many of their colleagues in the House and Senate. The group was also presented with a citation, from Governor Deval Patrick. After the ceremony in House Chambers, the group retired to the House Members Lounge where individual citations were awarded and lunch served. “Having some of the other lawmakers and the Speaker of the House, in particular, take time out of their busy day made us all feel very special,” noted Rachel Fennell, President of the Burlington Players.

Burlington can boast a national champion. As was pointed out to me yesterday, how many people can say they are part of a national championship? It is our honor to be able to celebrate this impressive accomplishment with the Burlington Players. The opportunity to share stories with them was an opportunity I won’t soon forget.

Representative Gordon, along with the entire State Legislature, is grateful for the group’s dedication to theater. Through their efforts, Burlington area residents have access to nationally recognized performance art. For that the area should feel pride.
