Root for a Cause

Come Root for a cause - fundraiser classes being held in April to support Boston Children's Hospital and Children's Tumor Foundation.

This month, Roots Yoga is hosting a series of Saturday afternoon classes being taught by recent RYT 200 Certified Yoga instructors. The donation based classes will raise funds for Boston Children's Hospital and Children's Tumor Foundation.

Roots was inspired by Yoga Reaches Out, an organization that focuses on raising funds that impact the health, education and well-being of children. Founded in 2010, the first Yogathon held at Gillette Stadium brought together close to 500 yogis who practiced on the training facility and raised over $225,00 for Children's Hospital and Yoga for single moms. Yogathon is being held on Sunday, April 28th, with an expected attendance of over 3,000 yogis!

We invite you to come to one of Roots fundraising classes to be a part of helping a child in need.

April 6th - Monique Hanafin

The first benefit class was taught by Monique Hanafin, who led a Power Vinyasa Flow class, a vigorous yoga class focusing on enhancing endurance, strength and
flexibility, synchronizing movement with breath while flowing from pose to pose. The age range was 21-80, with Hanafin offering moderations and encouraging students to go at their own pace. "What originally drew me to yoga was hearing that it could improve my Rheumatoid Arthritis," said Hanafin. Not only did Hanafin find yoga to be physically beneficial, but she also found the powerful mental and spiritual benefits that yoga offers. Hanafin completed Balasana Kid’s Yoga Teacher Training in the Spring of 2011 and is also a certified Itsy Bitsy Yoga® facilitator. "I love seeing the kids enjoy yoga while they're developing flexibility, confidence, awareness, motor skills and physical fitness. Yoga never fails to brighten my spirits; I couldn’t imagine my life without it, or the wonderful yogis I’ve met along the way," said Hanafin.

April 13th - Linda DeVincentis

Slated to graduate from The Yoga of Energy 200-Hour Teacher Training, Linda will be leading a teacher in training yoga class that will guide you through an energetic slow flow with a focus on breath and body awareness, helping you to  calm the pace of your life while connecting with your mind, body and spirit. The benefits will flow from your mat and into your life. "The amazing work done at Children’s Hospital has touched my life and the lives of countless others. A single visit to Children’s is enough to create a lifelong supporter. This is such a wonderful opportunity to support their efforts in a truly beautiful way," said DeVincentis, who along with hundreds of other yogis, will be at the 2013 Yoga Reaches Out New England Yogathon.

April 20th -Antoinette Turkal

Antoinette Turkal will be leading a power Vinyasa class. Turkal began practicing yoga ten years ago while searching for a routine that would replace her lifelong cheerleading career. "I was told that Yoga would transform my life if I let the magic happen," said Turkal, who found herself impatient at times and walking away from her mat, only to return again when she needed it. For the last five years, Turkal has dedicated herself to practicing yoga, becoming certified this past March. "I hold children's hospital very close to my heart. I was sick as a child and the team of doctors and nurses made me feel like I was their only patient. Now it's time for me to give back and support them in the same way they supported me," said Turkal.

April 27th - Caitrin Shiels

Caitrin became a certified instructor in the spring of 2013. Being the last of the benefit classes just a day before Yoga Reaches Out, Caitrin will focus on a Vinyasa style flow. Caitrin began practicing yoga when looking for a physical activity she could do while healing from running injuries. After recovering, she'd return to running, only to find herself reinjured. It took several years before she decided to put running aside and concentrate on yoga. "Yoga has allowed me to travel down a path of self-discovery. It's given me freedom from self-judgment, and I've gained the ability to truly care for myself in a way that I did not know possible. I consider it to be a part of my civic duty/karmic responsibility to help those who are less fortunate. Yoga Reaches Out brings like-minded people together to raise money for excellent causes. I am proud to be taking part in this wonderful fundraiser," said Shiels.
