Montserrat College of Art Hosts Annual 6th Congressional District Art Competition and Exhibition

Beverly, MA – Congressman John F. Tierney will once again serve as honorary chairman of the 6th Congressional District High School Art Competition and Exhibition  hosted at Montserrat College of Art, 301 Cabot Street, Beverly, Saturday, March 9, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

The exhibition is a juried art show, open to high school students from public and private schools within the 6th Congressional District of Massachusetts, as well as high school students home-schooled within the district.

Since 1982, more than 650,000 high school students around the nation have participated in the Congressional Art Competition. It is an opportunity for members of Congress to acknowledge the artistic talents of their young constituents and for the artwork of the district’s most gifted students to be showcased on the national stage.

Students from every school in the district are encouraged to participate, and submissions will be accepted Friday, March 1, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 2, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. to 301 Cabot St. Gallery, Beverly, MA.

“The annual Congressional Art Competition is a wonderful way of celebrating the exceptional creativity of young artists from our area and around the country,” Congressman Tierney said.  “As always, I look forward to seeing the diverse talent of the students of the 6th Congressional District at the art show this spring.”

Each year, Montserrat holds a public exhibition and a closing awards event. The exhibition will be open for public viewing from Wednesday, March 6 through Friday, March 8, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. with the closing awards show held on Saturday, March 9, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Joining the congressman at this year’s event will be Steven D. Immerman, president of Montserrat College of Art. The Award Winners will receive varying amounts of scholarship to Montserrat’s Pre-College summer program and the U.S. Postal Service will provide students with the option of having their artwork displayed at their local post office.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, the artwork of the Grand Award Winner will be sent to the U.S. Capitol Building where it will be displayed for one year with the work of other award winners from across the country. The winner from each district, accompanied by one adult, will be invited to attend the opening of that exhibition in Washington, D.C. to be scheduled for a date in June.
