Five great deals to help you save on local goods and services

We're all watching our family budgets these days.

Whether shopping with coupons or looking for two-for-one deals, we're taking advantage of all sorts of offers and savings that help us stretch our dollars. 

This Frugal Family column is dedicated to giving you five great local deals each week that will help your family’s bottom line, and since we do the scouting for you, you can save time as well as money.

Deal:  School shopping can officially commence: short sleeve graphic tees are selling for $6, skirts are $8, and active pants are $12.50. Slip on sneakers are only $10 and Old Navy Famous Jeans are on sale for $12 (regularly $19.50).  Grab the coupon in the Globe for $10 off the purchase of $50, and you've got yourself a nice little deal!

Good Through:  Thursday, August 18th

Deal:  Artists take heed; canvas packs are at the lowest price of the season at $12.99 each (regularly $19.99).  Use your 40% off one regular priced item from the Globe insert and stock up on paint supplies. There is also a back to school storage event with 40% organizers for closet and laundry. 

Good Through:  Saturday, August  13th

Deal:  Need pens? Stop by Staples and pick up Zebra Z-Grip retractable ballpoint 7/pk. for free - $4 with a $4 easy rebate.  2 pocket folders are .5¢ each, but you must have a $5 minimum purchase, which won't be difficult considering the other items on sale this week.  Sharpie permanent markers 2/pk. are .25¢, Bic Wite-Out 2/pk. and Staples jumbo paper clips 50/box are only .50¢. Noteworthy:  Most office chairs are on sale with a savings anywhere from $30-$90! Mesh chairs are $29.99, a $20 savings, and Cormac computer cart is also $29.99, a $40 savings.

Deal:  Cherries are $1.99/lb., the best deal of the season I've seen so far.  Lay's, Arnold sandwich thins, Thomas' English Muffins, Hatfield Ham Steak and Hormel Bacon are all BOGO's (buy1 get 1 free).  Lindy's Italian ice is only $1.77.  This Friday buy an 8-piece grilled chicken for only $5, no cooking required! 

Suggestion:  Sign up at Shaw's online and receive emails about sales as well  as printable coupons and recipe ideas.

Deal:   An overlooked veggie that's great in a stir fry, cauliflower is 2/$3 ( a $3 savings).   Mama Rosie's ravioli is 5/$5 (a $4.45 savings).  Like seafood?   Schrod Haddock fillets and flounder fillets are both $5.99/lb (a $2 savings), sea scallops are $13.99/lb (a $2 savings), and frozen Whiting fillets are $4.99 for a 16 oz. bag ( a $2 savings).  Time to stock up on cereal: Kellogg's cereals are priced at $2.99 with an in store coupon for $1.00 - final cost = $1.99.
