An earthquake that centered in Maine had area residents feeling the effects.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake has been downgraded to a 4.0.

In addition, Governor Deval Patrick has issued a statement on tonight's 'quake:

Many Massachusetts residents felt the effects of an earthquake tonight. According to MEMA, which is monitoring events and has briefed me, the quake was centered some 30 miles outside of Portland, Maine. So far, we have no reports of injury or damage in Massachusetts. MEMA will continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents should use caution if they encounter any damage and take a minute to check in on neighbors, family and friends.

Yes, we felt it for a few seconds in Waverly Oaks area. We held on to the shaking fish tank! It's very mysterious here, though I am originally from California where it's a bit more expected.

We felt it!!! (Brewster Dr, Needham) Our Labradoodle barked incessantly and then all the glasses in the house rattled and the ground (in the house) shook! The dog kept kept barking through it all but no one and nothing was hurt/broken, that's all that matters. I wonder what it registered as here in Needham that it originated in Maine as a 4.5 yet we definitely felt it here!?!

My husband and I had settled into our easy chairs and were watching tv, when we suddenly felt our chairs shake. The floor felt like a wave rippled under the chairs. My husband asked did you just move the chairs? And I said "I think we just had an earthquake"! We checked the Internet but didn't see anything. After a few minutes the tv and computer began to relay the earthquake information. Pretty neat...fortunately no injuries or damage.

Live in Plymouth, MA, and was in my upstairs study the entire room shook & moved and moved me along with it! I ran downstairs, looked out for wind or storm, nothing. Husband felt nothing in the downstairs kitchen while talking on phone to Newton, MA. Third time I've felt the earth move in Plymouth, MA, home but this time it moved me to jump up and run outdoors for safety. Glad to know it was real thing! Eileen Saint Lauren

I opened an email to write to a friend at 7:14, and instead of what I planned to say I wrote, "The whole house just creaked and crackled, then there was a rumble like a big plane was flying close by then faded out'.

I felt it in Dedham and sadly thought my son was trying to scare me by shaking my bed as I sat on it. It clearly felt like a big truck going by as they do making you feel the pressure on the ground shake at times, but to my surprise it was the earthquake. Sorry son. lol

A friend emailed that it felt like something was in his back yard, shaking his house,. I replied, "Maybe looked like this?", attaching a photo of King Kong. Still laughing about that this morning!

WAS EMAILING MY FRIEND IN FRANCE WHEN I FELT MY FLOOR RUMBLIND. WE LIVE ON A BUSY ROAD SO I DISMISSED IT AS A LARGE TRUCK DRIVING BY THE HOUSE. MY DAUGHTER WHO WAS UPSTAIR FELT IT AS WELL AS AKED WHAT WAS THAT. SHE THEN WENT ON LINE AND FOUND OUT IT WAS INDEED AN EARTHQUAKE. I PHONED THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ON THE REGULAR PHONE NUMBER NOT 911, WHO CONFIRMED THAT FACT BUT SAID THEY WERE MUCH TO BUSY TO DISCUSS AND ASKED IF THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY. I SAID NO AND HUNG UP.WITH 60 YEARS OF LIFE BEHIND ME THIS IS MY FIRST EARTHQUAKE EXPERIENCE. WHAT IS GOING ON?? I AM SO GLAD THAT EVEN NO DAMAGE TO REPORT THAT WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR HOME 24 YEARS AGO WE HAD EARTHQUAKE INSURANCE ON OUR HOME AND PROPERTY!!
