  • A Man, A Plan, A Canal, Panama: On this day in 1977 U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian General Omar Torrijos Herrera signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaties which stated the Panama Canal would be turned over to Panama's control in the year 2000. The canal, built by the United States (started by the French) between 1881 and 1914, allowed ships to cross Central America without going around South America and revolutionized maritime trading for the entire region. The canal also gave us the palindrome that is the tag for the history fact.
