5 Things You Need to Know Today, May 11

Scattered afternoon showers, car wash and Zumba fundraisers and a musical service.

Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance.

Today is Friday, May 11. Here are 5 things you need to know:

  • Scattered afternoon showers: Looks like a mixed bag today. According to the National Weather Service we can expect scattered showers after 1 p.m. Otherwise partly sunny with a high near 67 degrees. Scattered showers this evening with an overnight low around 43.
  • Car wash for cancer: The Burlington Relay for Life teams Rainbow Connection and The Butterflies are holding a fund-raising car wash at 5 Mallard Way from 3 to 7 p.m. today. Price is $5 and funds go to the Relay for Life and American Cancer Society. There will also be a bottle and can drive, so bring redeemable recyclables to donate if you wish.
  • Zumba fundraiser: Another benefit for the Burlington Relay for Life. Team Cancer Curing Cuties is to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Event starts at 7 p.m. at the gym. Organizers are asking participants to wear purple. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
  • Music service: is hosting a starting at 6:30 p.m. this evening. Come sing, dance and play along with the Temple Band in this rousing Shabbat services. Great for children and adults of all ages. Everyone gets a Shabbat Shaker and special Oneg Shabbat dessert buffet following the service.
  • No more nukes: On this day in 1995 the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is meant to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, was extended indefinitely. Originally passed in 1970, the treaty is meant to limit nuclear weapons to the five established nuclear powers: The United States, Russia, United Kingdom, France and China. While the NPT may have helped prevent the spread of nukes, it hasn't been flawless. India, Pakistan and North Korea, all non-signers of the agreement, have tested the bomb. It is also widely believes that Israel, which is a signatory, has the weapon but the state has never acknowledged that.
