5 Things You Need to Know Today, July 5

A nice and mostly sunny day, summer reading event and a chance to play bridge.

Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance.

Today is Thursday, July 5. Here are 5 things you need to know:

  • Mostly sunny: Looks like a nice day today. According to the National Weather Service we can expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 84 degrees. Partly cloudy overnight with a low around 64.
  • Bridge: The is hosting two bridge playing events today. The is COA Bridge Players, a group aimed at seniors, which will meet at 10 a.m. The is the Thursday Night Bridge group, which meets at 6:30 p.m. Both sessions are open to the public, so come down, play some bridge and meet new people.
  • Summer Reading: The Burlington Library is also hosting a Teen Summer Reading Program: Craft & Snack Tie Dye event from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today. Bring in an item you would like to tie-dye. Snacks will also be provided.
  • Send us your 4th of July Pics: Have a family outing? See some area fireworks? Go to the Burlington Parade? Send us you pictures of you and your family and friends enjoying Independence Day for our community image gallery. Add them to the article on the home page or email them to Burlington@patch.com.
  • Say it ain't so, Joe: On this day in 1921, jury selection began in the trial of the infamous 1919 Chicago White Sox. Allegations abounded that White Sox players threw the World Series to benefit themselves and gamblers. Although the players—including Shoeless Joe Jackson, Eddie Cicotte and Buck Weaver—were acquitted by a jury, the Black Sox were banned from baseball by Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis. Many believe that Jackson likely accepted money, but never played to throw the Series, while Buck Weaver didn't participate in the scandal at all. However, both men were banned with the rest of their teammates.
