• The Boston Strangler strikes: On this day in 1964, the Boston Strangler raped and killed his 13 th victim, Mary Sullivan, in her city apartment. The Boston Strangler, later identified as Albert DeSalvo, raped and killed several women between 1962 and 1964, always tying the rope or cord used to strangle them in a bow. In addition to the bow, the Strangler left a “Happy New Year” card next to Mary Sullivan’s body in 1964. Although DeSalvo admitted to the crimes to his cellmate in prison, he was never tried or convicted for the Strangler’s murders. Instead, he was given a life sentence for a string of rapes he committed throughout New England between 1960 and 1962. DeSalvo was killed by a prisoner while in Walpole State Prison in 1973.
