  • Gold rush: On this day in 1896, a man salmon fishing in Canada's Yukon Territory spots gold nuggets in the creek bed. The discovery would lead to the gold rush in the American west. The news of gold spread across the country and over two years nearly 50,000 miners went west looking for gold. Between the late 1800s and 1966, large operations mined about $250 million worth of gold. Now, about 200 small gold mines continue to operate in the Yukon Territory.
